While most smartphone news as of late has been centered on Apple’s dominance in the market, June has proved fruitful for its competitor. And this meteoric rise will more than likely not be stopping anytime soon.
According to a report by Barron’s featuring analysis from Charter Equity Research, it has been predicted that Palm has sold 300,000 Pre’s in the month of June.
Wait until Palm itself releases the true numbers until you pass judgment, but it’s hard to believe they will be anything but stellar.
So, save your applause for a few days but from the looks of things, Palm has found its place in the smartphone market." Via Examiner.com .

An anonymous tipster sent us some details about iPhone OS 3.1 Beta. MMS is enabled for AT&T, but for some reason it hangs up and fails before the MMS goes out (enabled but not working yet for AT&T).

What I found interesting in the article is how closely RIM's current position (current leader) practically mirrors the Palm of yesterday pre-Rubinstein.
"You have to look at the big picture here… for what RIM is working with (an incredibly miserable Java OS with so much security and encryption and smoke-blowing APIs) they’ve hit the jackpot. Their OS architecture is fantastic, their use of security is what makes them so trustworthy. But, as each handset release comes closer and closer, people start to see the bigger picture. And that’s the fact that RIM’s OS is more than antiquated, it’s borderline laughable. But it works, you’re thinking, so what’s wrong? I’ve been saying this for years, but it wasn’t designed to do anything the BlackBerry does now. Imagine scotch taping car parts to a 200hp engine and see how far that gets you. Obviously, it’s just a viciously rough metaphor, but we believe a correct one."
Definitely check out the article, it's a great read!

So the report he issued Monday bears notice. Mr. Snyder said that his sources in the manufacturing and retail channels indicated that Palm had sold 300,000 phones — considerably higher than some estimates by analysts — and that the company was struggling to keep up with demand. Mr. Snyder estimates that the company now is producing 15,000 units a day and will ship one million phones to Sprint in the first full quarter of production." Via The New York Times .

The exuberance among investors puzzled some analysts, who found little in Palm's results to give them a handle on the company's prospects. The company just introduced its first phone with a new operating system that will make or break Palm as it tries to compete with the iPhone and other smart phones.
Palm appeared to be confident when reporting results late Thursday, saying that it could have positive cash flow by the second half of the recently begun fiscal year.
"It appears that Palm could return to profitability several quarters sooner than previously anticipated, a noteworthy development," wrote CL King analyst Lawrence Harris in a note to investors.
Palm shares rose $2.37, or 16.9 percent, to $16.39 in afternoon trading. The stock earlier traded at $16.48, its highest price since October 2007.

At Palm, we plan to capitalize on this opportunity by focusing on three strategic objectives. First, bringing products to market that people love will always be our primary measure of success. We need to develop quality devices known for innovative design and a delightful user experience which consumers associate with Palm. If we accomplish this, everything else will follow.
Second, we are working hard to ensure that Palm Web OS becomes a world-class platform for application development. Web OS has a web-centric development model, so anyone who creates software for the web already knows how to build for us. The feedback we’re getting from developers in our early access program confirms that developing for Web OS is easy and fast compared to other platforms.
We are eager to grant wider access to our SDK but we need to do so in a measured and methodical fashion, so we can be sure we are providing a great development experience and attentive developer support.
Over the next few weeks, we expect the program to grow from hundreds to thousands of developers and our goal from there is to make our SDK available to everyone by the end of this summer.
We are confident that before too long, we’ll narrow the gap with competitive App offerings and deliver a discovery and download experience that reflects the overall seamlessness of a Palm Web OS device.
Finally, we need to turn consumer preferences for our products into sustained loyalty and make Palm once again synonymous with easy-to-use cutting edge and indispensable products. With the re-introduction of Palm through our new Web OS products, we have a great opportunity to revitalize the brand in the U.S. and to expand our footprint in international markets. Coupled with superior service and support, we think the Palm user experience can generate the long-term loyalty and repeat purchases that iconic brands are known for."- Jon Rubinstein, CEO of Palm
