The shares fell 7.6 percent after Research In Motion reported first-quarter profit of 84 cents a share, trailing the 85 cents predicted by analysts in a Bloomberg survey. Earnings this period will be as little as 84 cents, compared with the 92- cent average prediction.
Co-Chief Executive Officer James Balsillie boosted selling and marketing expenses by 84 percent in the quarter to counter the buzz of the iPhone and new handsets from smaller rival Palm Inc. Apple will release a faster iPhone next month that costs $199, cheaper than some BlackBerry models. That may hinder Research In Motion's expansion beyond its corporate stronghold."

RIM jumped from 35.1 to 44.5 percent between the fourth and first quarters largely through further expansions of its BlackBerry range into the high-end home user market, which is still relatively new to the originally business-oriented company. Palm in turn raised its share from 7.9 percent to 13.4 percent based largely on sales of the Centro, which is considered one of the least expensive new smartphones on sale in the US and is targeted at first-time as well as price-conscious users trading up from comparatively limited devices." The Boy Genius is reporting that RIM will be releasing a touchscreen BlackBerry this year, and Verizon will be the chosen child for exclusivity. Currently the BlackBerry Thunder's model # is 9500 and it has some crazy specs. If the BlackBerry Bold is any indicator of what RIM has up its sleeves to take on Apple, the BlackBerry Thunder could be monumental. CrackBerry users are just as loyal as Mac fanboys. The new BlackBerry handset is intriguing, but the real news is RIM's new, much faster platform.
"The US' top smartphone maker, Research in Motion, today announced its first major new platform in two years. The BlackBerry Bold 9000 still looks like existing BlackBerrys, but it's packed with new power, most notably a 624-Mhz processor and
The 9000 is only the first of a new line which will come to all major US carriers (both CDMA and GSM— even on T-Mobile's 1700-Mhz band), and will appear in various form factors, much as RIM's existing platform comes in businesslike 8800, casual Curve, and petite Pearl styles, CEO Mike Lazaridis said.
Superficially, the 9000 looks a lot like a streamlined Curve or 8800. The all-important keyboard has the 8800's sculpted keys, but the rows are separated by curved barriers. The screen is higher-contrast and higher-res, at 320 by 480, and the device runs a new version of the BlackBerry OS, 4.6.
We got to play with the Bold a bit during our meeting, and found some interesting tidbits. The device feels solid, with a fake-leather back and metal accents. At 4.5 by 2.6 by 0.55 inches and 4.7 oz, it's wider, longer, and heavier but slightly slimmer than the BlackBerry Curve.
The keyboard feels better than the 8800's tight keyboard, mostly because of the space between the rows.
The new screen is simply gorgeous; it looks flush with the front of the device, and it has an excellent viewing angle.
The UI is familiar to any BlackBerry user, but some elements use 3D effects and translucency. And the thing feels fast—really fast. The camera can now record 480-by-320 videos, and can geotag photos with your GPS location. (Yes, there will be a camera-less version.) You can browse the device's memory and save files into it from e-mail."

"As part of a newly-created team, you’ll influence the development and design of BlackBerry software," the listing reads. "This is a very confidential brand new team and a senior position within RIM so I can't provide too many details. I guess you can figure out what it might be about though."
Among the requirements are a very strong emphasis on existing experience with Mac development, including programming in both Cocoa and Objective C as well as user interface design.
Web experience with Javascript, XML, and other functions is also essential. Experiences with developing for the Mac's Sync Services feature and interfacing with Bluetooth and USB devices are both considered assets, according to the company." Via AppleInsider .

The New York Times has a great article about RIM's plans on fending off the iPhone.
"THERE’S a reason that R.I.M. is averse to the iPhone’s glass pad. “I couldn’t type on it and I still can’t type on it, and a lot of my friends can’t type on it,” says Mike Lazaridis, R.I.M.’s co-chief executive and technological visionary. “It’s hard to type on a piece of glass.”
Mr. Lazaridis thinks that e-mail-dependent BlackBerry owners demand the reliability and tactile feedback of a keyboard. But, despite his critique of the iPhone, he does not dismiss the possibility that R.I.M. may itself one day sell a touch-screen phone, aimed specifically at consumers without the e-mail demands of BlackBerry’s core users.
Indeed, two independent developers writing software for coming R.I.M. devices say that a touch-screen BlackBerry is in the works, and that R.I.M. engineers privately refer to it as the A.K. — for “Apple Killer.”
"Analysts say that R.I.M.’s greatest challenge in a consumer-driven smartphone industry may simply be creating devices that people admire and covet as much as the iPhone. Despite the faithfulness of its flock, R.I.M. is not there yet.
In a survey this year of 3,600 professionals by ChangeWave, a research company, 54 percent of BlackBerry users said they were very satisfied with their devices.
Even so, the BlackBerry was a distant second in the survey: the comparable figure for the iPhone was 79 percent."

"Following the notorious blackout last year, RIM promised that it would never happen again. Hollow promises, as around 80% of all Berry devices in the continental US have been affected by a service outage that began around 3 am this morning. "Canalys has produced a report showing the iPhone has grown massively in North America. The study looked specifically at smartphone market share statistics in Q3, and the iPhone, in a surprisingly short time span, has managed to grab second position. A 27% market share is nothing to scoff at; what Apple has done in a few months, others have failed to do in years.
Smartphones running Symbian, Linux and Palm OS all fall behind Apple's iPhone. This is ever more stunning because the iPhone is only available via one carrier, in contrast, the other platforms can be procured from various cellular networks. This dramatically increases their market penetration. From the perspective of a business model, these figures are simply astronomical." Via Gizmodo .

"The BlackBerry 9100 will sport a screen with the dimensions of 480 x 320 (or maybe that’s 320 x 480), 1GB of on-board memory, and an Intel XScale PXA270 processor at 624MHz, clocking in slightly faster than the 620MHz ARM 1173 processor found in the iPhone. The BlackBerry 9000 will sport the dual-threat of GPS and WiFi as well as introducing 3G support (multi-band HSDPA) to the GSM carrier family devices, answering the prayers of many of us."

In comments made before his performance at Macworld earlier this year, when Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone, sapless singer/songwriter Mayer told attendees that Jobs' penchant for making consumer-friendly products was "like the opposite of terrorism." Should we therefore assume, then, that Mayer's current gig as a high-profile sponsor of iPhone competitor BlackBerry Curve means he's gone over to the dark side?
John Mayer has taken up with iPhone rival BlackBerry, probably ending his run of Macworld appearances.
Research In Motion (RIM) is the official sponsor of Mayer's summer tour, coming soon to a high-school cafeteria near you. The Unofficial Apple Weblog spotted a Web page on RIM's site that contains "exclusive" video and photos of Mayer fondling a BlackBerry Curve. The Curve is "an extension of thought," Mayer says in the video. "The BlackBerry kind of betrays geography."
As an Apple fan I much prefer seeing John Mayer using something I'm not. Just because he sings and occasionally blogs doesn't give him the street cred of telling people what the best tech gadget to own is, especially now that BlackBerry is sponsoring his tour. John do us a favor, stick to music, and trying to date B-List celebrities. We don't want/need your gadget advice, you're not that influential.

"Perhaps the biggest gem to come out RIM's Wireless Enterprise Symposium held earlier this month in Orlando, Senior Vice President David Yach let it slip that the company's first WiFi-capable handsets will launch in the second half of 2007. While pointing out that most of its rivals are owning RIM in the WiFi category, he said that the integration isn't great and RIM had been holding off on adding the feature until they could get it to the point that it would "just work." He goes on to say that WiFi will be used as an alternative when cell coverage isn't available -- and that carrier cooperation has been necessary -- suggesting that VoIP will be a focus."

"Research In Motion has partnered with the two big US CDMA carriers to launch the new BlackBerry 8830 World Edition, the first dual-mode GSM/CDMA handset from the manufacturer. The BlackBerry 8830 combines EV-DO capable CDMA coverage with a SIM card slot for GSM use when traveling to make the device truly useful when abroad.
The new BlackBerry 8830 is similar to the already available 8800, with the manufacturer's updated design and trackball feature. There really is no going past the dual-mode functionality when looking for a killer feature for the device though, as it will be one of the first generally available devices to have such a feature when it launches with both Sprint and Verizon Wireless. The BlackBerry 8830 will work on 800/1900MHz CDMA/EV-DO networks, and when coupled with a SIM card through your selected carrier's Global BlackBerry service or a third party carrier, will also roam on 900/1800MHz GSM/GPRS services. Unfortunately, it seems that you will not be able to use a SIM card from third party providers with the Verizon Wireless version of the handset, only the one provided with the Global BlackBerry service. The Sprint version does not appear to have this limitation.
Measuring up at 114mm x 66mm x 13.9mm (4.49" x 2.6" x 0.55") and weighing in at 130.4g (4.6oz), the BlackBerry 8830 is both smart and stylish. MicroSD memory cards can be used to complement the 64MB of on board memory, and the device features a 320x240 pixel resolution 65k color TFT LCD display. Standard BlackBerry features like Bluetooth and speakerphone functionality are present, as is a build in GPS module.
The Verizon Wireless BlackBerry 8830 will be available on May 14, while Sprint customers will have to wait until sometime in July of this year."

"Time will tell if this is legit or not, but for now Oh No They Didn’t is reporting that a hacker has broken into Lindsay Lohan personal Blackberry, Gmail, and MySpace account, having gained access to loads of personal pictures and e-mail correspondence. Among the items already available are some MySpace photos, as featured here, and Myspace e-mails from such celebrities as the ubiquitous Paris Hilton, Shanna Moakler, and DJ Samantha Ronson, who’s dubiously rumored to be Lindsay Lohan’s big lesbian hookup."
Meanwhile Lohan’s hacker is promising to open up a website in the next 3-4 days; hawking their items for a profit no doubt. So will we get to see anything as interesting as Lindsey Lohan topless? We all know she’s far too modest for something like that.
Either way, this sure feels like a retread of last summer, when it was suspected that Paris Hilton herself hacked into Lohan’s BlackBerry and was leaving harassing messages on friend’s voice mail. While Lindsey Lohan’s publicist eventually acquitted Paris of the charge, it was not before admitting that Paris was the initial suspect; and accusations are again surfacing that Paris’ camp is behind this current hack." "While we already knew that most fellas would undoubtedly choose a hot new gizmo over a foxy new lady, this mentality probably changes once you're already committed, and in the case of Rafael Paz, the recent email glitches cost him the latter. In another story hampered by horrific timing, Paz and his SO suffered through "a really bad argument" shortly before the breakdowns began, and after writing her man several emails and getting no reply, she cut the cord on their relationship for good. Of course, Rafael received the notes hours later, but apparently, his lady isn't "falling for" the so-called BlackBerry outages excuse."
C'mon ending a relationship over this?? It's not like all telephone systems were down. It just goes to show you where some of us are as a culture when it comes to technology. Maybe his girl should check the net and would have seen that CrackBerry was down for hours (major news sites were reporting it), her bf just wasn't ignoring her, or maybe she/he could have called eachother like we did in the old days to argue with our significant other?? Just goes to show you that people are too dependent on CrackBerries these days and couldn't fathom it going down. It did, get over it. A phone call could have easily saved this releationship. Damn, I don't want to sound like Dr. Phil!
