iJailBreak Mobile allows you to Jailbreak your iPhone/iPod touch over the air

A new Jailbreakin' app has come on the scene. iJailbreak is the simplest Jailbreak solution to date. This is the first ever, over the air Jailbreak for the iPhone and iPod touch. There is no computer required. All you need is to have a Jailbroken iPhone or touch running Frimware 1.1.1, or 1.1.2, and have Installer App. on it. This process takes about 45 minutes to do since it's being done over the air & no computer involved. Make sure you check out CrunchGear for more details.

iPhone Jailbreak 1.1.3 update (it was a success)
I ran into a few problems initially when trying to upgrade my iPhone with the new 1.1.3 Jailbreak (I have a feeling it was Windows related). Luckily, Nate True released a Mac version of the 1.1.3 Jailbreak . I did not run into one problem using the Mac version, I wish I could say the same for Windows, but that's besides the point. As you can see my iPhone is running firmware 1.1.3. Installer app is working, and most 3rd party apps are working as well. Developers will be updating their applications to make them compatible with firmware 1.1.3. It was quick and painless (especially on a Mac).

  1.1.3 iPhone jailbreak goes LIVE
"A splinter dev team has just released its 1.1.3 jailbreak. This jailbreak, as discussed in our earlier post provides a "soft upgrade" path for jailbroken 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 users. (See that post for many of the technical details.) For right now, this jailbreak is limited to Windows users only, with a Mac release expected shortly. This does not jailbreak the iPod touch--iPhone only for now.

A special edition of Nate True's iBrickr software will prepare the image used for the update and a second installer portion will flash the phone. Smxy repository maintainer, Shaun Erickson has packed up this second portion of the jailbreak, which will be available via Installer.app." Via TUAW .

I'm doing this to my iPhone currently and will post my results.

UPDATE

iBrickr has just checked my iPhone, and is now downloading the 1.1.3 firmware from Apple.

Applying the 1.1.3 soft upgrade via Installer.

The 1.1.3 soft upgrade was applied, iPhone rebooted. iBrickr is uploading.

****UPDATE****

I and many others are finding this update isn't working. I'm still holding a Jailbroken 1.1.2 iPhone.

Firmware 1.1.3 changes where and how applications are installed, people who have gotten this to work can't access their 3rd party apps yet. I'd recommend holding off on this until things gets sorted out.

*Home screen: Up to 9 home screens can now be created and "flicked" between.

Want to know the name & artist of a song playing on the radio? Hold your iPhone up to the speaker

iPhone hacking extraordinaire Erica Sadun has come up with another great iPhone application called Listen. Listen will allow you to hold your iPhone up to a radio to get the name of the song, the artist's name, and the name of the album. Very cool!!

"Download a copy of the Listen beta. It’s still *very* beta. Install it on your iPhone, get near music and run it. It will sample the music for 5 seconds and then attempt to contact the id server. If it succeeds, great, you’ll see the song, artist and album. If it fails, nothing happens. You just wait 30 seconds and if you haven’t gotten an ID, quit and restart the program."

iPhone 1.1.3 Update Confirmed, Breaks Apps and Unlocks
"It installs only from iTunes using the obligatory Apple private encryption key, which nobody has. The list of new features, like GPS-like triangulation positioning in Google Maps, has been confirmed too. Apparently it will be coming out next week, but there's bad news as expected: it breaks the unlocks, patches the previous vulnerabilities used by hackers and takes away all your third-party applications." Via Slashdot .

As with all previous iPhone firmware updates, if you want to run 3rd party apps don't install the update until the iPhone Dev Community comes up with a way to Jailbreak and upgrade to 1.1.3.

Wired names Jailbroken iPhone as one of the top gadgets of 2007
Wired didn't name the out of the box iPhone to its top gadget list, it named the "hacked" Jailbroken iPhone.

"Out of the box, Apple's iPhone is horrifically crippled. With a mid-triple-digit price tag and ample power purring within, Cupertino's flummoxing user restrictions did nothing but motivate the haxz0r community. Broken wide open by these ninja tinkerers, the Jesus phone comes to life with third-party homebrew software ranging from retro-gaming emulators to serious PIM apps. Why wait until February for carefully curated (and controlled) outside development, when you can have it now, and feel a little dirty while you're at it?"

Mobilestack for iPhone and iPod touch

A cool new feature in Mac OS X Leopard is called "Stacks", which lets you keep files you use regularly right in your Dock without cluttering your Dock (they spring up when you need them). "Mobilestack" allows you to do the same thing on your iPhone or iPod touch. I installed Mobilestack on my iPhone, it works just like "Stacks" in OS X. Mobilestack is currently in beta and there's no way to edit which applications are in Mobilestack. The developer of Mobilestack will be updating it soon to add more features. Gotta love the iPhone hckers!

Restore your iPhone back to Firmware 1.0.2 (get 3rd party apps back)

I should have known better to upgrade my iPhone to version 1.1.1, but i bit the bullet and did it. I soon realized that I missed all of the 3rd party apps on my iPhone (they get wiped out, and there's no way to install them with 1.1.1). Sure the iTunes WiFi Music Store is cool, the new iPod controls are cool, double tapping home is cool, but 3rd party apps are so much more useful. I soon came to regret doing the update. I thought I would have to live with my iPhone as-is and forget about all of the useful 3rd party apps, or so I thought.

Erica over @ TUAW was the first to report that the iPhone Dev Team has come up with a way to allow you to restore your iPhone's firmware from version 1.1.1 back to 1.0.2. I just did it and restored my 1.1.1 iPhone back to 1.0.2 and and finally have all of my 3rd party apps back which are so much more useful than the iTunes WiFi Store. Engadget has posted a video showing you how to do this.

Maybe this will be a wake up call to Apple that the iPhone NEEDS 3rd party apps and more importantly iPhone owners want them. The majority of people going back to 1.0.2 are doing it to bring back the ability to install 3rd party apps, not unlocking their iPhone. Apple embrace the 3rd party developer community already, clearly people outside of Apple are making some great applications. As clever as Apple is it only took a little over a day for the iPhone Dev Team to do what they do best, make the iPhone a much better iPhone.

iPhone Dev Team issues response to Apple's statement
Yesterday Apple released a statement which said that the next iPhone firmware could potentially brick unlocked iPhones. The iPhone Dev Team has issued a response to anyone with an ulocked iPhone.

9/25 Statement from the iPhone unlockers

Based on download numbers, the iPhone Dev Team believes that, worldwide, several hundred thousand people have unlocked their iPhones. That number continues growing every day. The removal of the lock, a bug, was a major step forward in the iPhone development. It made the iPhone free and useful to anyone, not only to those in certain countries.

Apple now announces that the next firmware update, expected later this week, will possibly break the handset of all of us free users in the World. It speaks of "damage" done to the firmware and "unauthorized access" to our own property, The removal of those firmware problems, which were built in in favor for AT&T, does not cause "damage" as they want to make us believe.

We will provide you with a tool in the next week which will be able to recover your nck counter and seczones and even enables you to restore your phone to a Factory-like state.

In the meantime we advise you not to update your free iPhone with the upcoming firmware. Wait for the next version to be fixed to work properly with your carrier and not break your phone.

  To Do List for iPhone
One of the most used applications I use on my Smartphones is the To Do List. I don't know why Apple left out such an important application from the iPhone. The good news is if you're using Nullriver's Installer App you can download a very good To Do List application. MobileToDoList is the only To Do List application available for the iPhone, and it works very well.

MobileToDoList allows you to create, edit tasks, put them under categories, and also show you how many tasks you have from the home screen. The application is constantly being updated and is one of my favorite applications on my iPhone.

  Steve Jobs on iPhone hacks
"Jobs acknowledged that third-party developers have started to produce several intriguing, yet unofficial iPhone applications. He said Apple is looking at some of them closely, especially those that don't require a connection to the Internet. It's likely that those applications would be the first of any to receive an official endorsement from Apple, according to Jobs' comments, as those that require Internet access could threaten the 'high standard' of experience customers have come to expect with the iPhone."

There are some great 3rd party apps available for the iPhone, I have a few that I use daily. A platform is only as good as the software that runs on it. Hopefully Apple will realize that adding support for 3rd party apps will make the iPhone that much more appealing to an even larger audience. There's only so much you can do with the Stock and Weather app before it gets old ;)

Apple exec: we’ll neither forbid nor support native code on OS X-based iPhone, iPod touch
"A couple of PC Magazine folks met with Apple marketing honcho Greg Joswiak yesterday to talk about the new iPods," Sascha Segan reports for Gearlog. "First of all, the iPod touch and iPhone use the same software platform - they're both running OS X on basically the same hardware, Joswiak said."

"The iPod touch does not have Bluetooth. Any images on the Internet that may have implied that it did were errors, Joswiak said. Also, there are no games coming for the iPod Touch right now," Segan reports

"Apple will neither forbid nor support native code on the iPhone/Touch," Segan reports. "They will not design software updates specifically to break native apps, but if the updates happen to break native apps or your native apps turn your iPhone into a rutabaga, don't go crying to Apple."

  iPhone hacking for everyone

Installing 3 party apps on your iPhone is very easy, it also makes the iPhone a much more productive smartphone. I took some screenshots of the 3rd party apps on my iPhone. LifeHacker has posted fool proof/easy instructions for anyone wanting to add more applications to their iPhone.

As you can see I've got tons of applications on my iPhone. The one 3rd party app missing and the one I REALLY want is a To Do List (hopefully someone will create one ASAP). Hint hint ;)

Song Sender sends iPhone tunes to email and ringtones

Erica over @ TUAW has released another one of her excellent iPhone applications. She just made a new application called Song Sender . When you run the application, it reads your library, creating a scrolling list of all of the music on your iPhone. Tap on a song and a screen will pop up asking you if you'd like to play the song, send it via email, or add it to your ringtones. I just tried it on my iPhone and it works great.

Hack your iPhone the easy way

I've been wanting to hack my iPhone ever since I saw one of my co-workers do it to his iPhone. iFuntastic is a new application that will allow you to move around the icons on the iPhone, as well as add custom ringtones, and change the AT&T carrier logo. This is all achieved by using an application that does all the work for you, there is no command line involved, it couldn't be simpler. I just did it to my iPhone and it was a success.

Not your run of the mill iPhone

A co-worker decided to "mod" his iPhone, here's some shots taken with my iPhone. I gotta say he did an amazing job, and he didn't "brick" his iPhone in the process:)
