Patent lawyer: Apple going after HTC first and Motorola next, but Google’s the real target
"On Tuesday, Apple sued HTC, the Taiwanese company that is the largest maker of smartphones running Google’s Android operating system, including the Nexus One, designed and sold by Google," Brad Stone reports for The New York Times.

"In the lawsuit, filed with the office of the United States International Trade Commission and the United States District Court in Delaware, Apple said that HTC phones running Android violated 20 of its patents, including those relating to the iPhone’s ability to recognize the touch of multiple fingers on its screen at once," Stone reports. "Though the lawsuit singles out HTC, many patent lawyers and analysts say they believe Apple’s target is Google and the Android operating system, which the company gives away to cellphone manufacturers."   Apple Sues HTC for Patent Infringement
From Apple PR:

CUPERTINO, California—March 2, 2010—Apple® today filed a lawsuit against HTC for infringing on 20 Apple patents related to the iPhone’s user interface, underlying architecture and hardware. The lawsuit was filed concurrently with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and in U.S. District Court in Delaware.

“We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.”

Vodafone and HTC unveil Android-powered HTC Magic

Vodafone and HTC Corporation today announced the HTC Magic smartphone, Vodafone’s first Android-powered mobile, which will be available in the spring.

The stylish new handset is exclusive to Vodafone in the UK, Spain, Germany and France (SFR) and available on a non-exclusive basis in Italy. Customers can ensure that they are the first to receive information about the HTC Magic’s availability, pricing and pre-ordering by registering their interest via their local Vodafone website from today.

The introduction of the HTC Magic is the result of a successful relationship between Vodafone and HTC, and Vodafone’s joining, late last year, of the Open Handset Alliance.

A tablet-style device, with a sleek design and unprecedented compactness for a smartphone featuring the Android platform, the HTC Magic enables a superior mobile internet experience, providing broad flexibility for personalisation via the application-rich Android Market. Available in white in the UK, Spain and France, black in Germany and in both colours in Italy, the HTC Magic will be for sale in several other Vodafone markets over the next few months.

“Delivering an unbeatable mobile internet experience for our customers is a priority for Vodafone, so we are very excited to be introducing our first Android-powered smartphone in the spring,” says Patrick Chomet, Global Director of Terminals, Vodafone Group. “Following our joining of the Open Handset Alliance, we have worked very closely with HTC to bring this cool new phone to the market. Our customers want to access a wide range of the most attractive mobile devices to help them make the most of their time - the HTC Magic helps meet that need.”

“The HTC Magic embodies the compact style and sophistication for which HTC has come to be known, with the powerful and intuitive internet experience for which the Android platform was designed,” says Peter Chou, president and CEO, HTC Corporation. “We are proud of our partnership with Vodafone and excited about making the Android-powered HTC Magic available to Vodafone customers in Europe.”

"The announcement of the HTC Magic is an important step for Android and the Open Handset Alliance," says Andy Rubin, Senior Director of Mobile Platforms at Google. "With it, Vodafone is opening up the mobile web for consumers across Europe and giving more third-party developers a platform on which they can build the next wave of killer applications."

Available from free on various price plans, the HTC Magic has a 3.2” QVGA touch screen display and features a trackball and navigational buttons for quick, easy access. The HTC Magic includes a variety of email options such as Google Mail™, POP3 and IMAP as well as Google Talk™ for instant messaging.

The HTC Magic has a variety of powerful mobile internet capabilities beginning with an Android-optimised Webkit browser. It also features the popular Google™ applications, Google Maps™ and Google Search™ as well as favourites like YouTube™. In addition, Android Market allows for quick and easy downloading of games and applications utilising Vodafone’s fast and reliable network.

T-Mobile sending out new battery for T-Mobile G1

When I first received my T-Mobile G1 the battery life was excellent for the 1st 2 weeks. I then began to notice that the G1 was draining very fast, so I disabled Wi-Fi, and GPS thinking that would help, it didn't. I started looking around to see if other G1 owners were suffering the same problem. I came across this Android Community thread and found out many G1 owners were suffering from the same problem.

I gave T-Mobile customer care a call and explained the situation. I told them the 1st 2 weeks I had the G1 the battery was excellent, but now it hardly made it through a day. The rep told me that T-Mobile is aware of the issue of the G1's battery draining fast and that they were working with HTC on a software fix. The rep said she would send out a replacement battery, and to keep the original as a backup.

I received the new battery, it seems to be working better than the original. The battery looks identical to the original. The only difference I can tell is the new battery is listed as part # 35H00106-02M, the original battery is listed as part # 35H00106-01M. They both have the same "hTC INNOVATION" logo on them.

Hopefully an update will be released soon to fix the issue.

T-Mobile to sell more than 600,000 G1 handsets in 2008

"HTC CEO Peter Chou told Mercury News, “We are very excited about this new Android (Google’s mobile operating system) approach. This will give us more opportunities for growth. Of course, we are not de-prioritizing Windows Mobile by any means. However, with Android we can do more. We should be doing good numbers, but I can’t disclose the details. It will be more than what we originally planned. I’m saying we will ship more than 600,000.” Via Android Community .

  HTC manufacturing Treo Pro
Digitimes is reporting that Palm has chosen HTC to manufacture the Treo Pro instead of Inventec.

"Taiwan-based High Tech Computer (HTC) has been chosen to manufacture Palm's latest Windows Mobile-based smartphone, the Treo Pro, according to sources at handset vendors.

HTC's experience manufacturing Windows Mobile-based smartphones is the main reason Palm selected the company to manufacture the smartphone for it, even thought they are competitors in the market. The smartphone is expected to launched in September this year.

With HTC also manufacturing Sony Ericsson's Microsoft-based X1 smartphone, which will launch in the fourth quarter this year, Palm's ODM business proportion among HTC's total handset shipments will rise again. However, HTC has noted that its own-brand business will still be the main focus.

Although HTC is manufacturing the new handset for Palm, Inventec Appliances is still Palm's biggest ODM partner."

Sprint phone first to use fast network

NEW YORK - Sprint Nextel Corp. is upgrading one of its cell phone models so that it can connect to a faster data network, doubling its download speeds and boosting upload speeds by about eight times. ADVERTISEMENT

Both Sprint and Verizon Wireless operate so-called EV-DO Rev. A networks, but have used them only for laptop cards. Their fastest phones have used the older and slower EV-DO Rev. 0 network.

Sprint said Monday it was releasing a software update for the Mogul phone, made by HTC Corp. of Taiwan, that will enable the phone to connect at Rev. A speeds. Downloads speeds should be 600 kilobits per second to 1,400 kbps, up from a range of 400 kbps to 700 kbps with Rev. 0. It will be capable of uploads of 350 to 500 kbps, up from 50 kbps to 70 kbps.

Sprint said its broadband network now covers 234 million people, and the vast majority of it has been upgraded to EV-DO Rev. A, short for Evolution-Data Optimized Revision A.

The Mogul is a smart phone that runs Windows Mobile software and can be used as a modem for a laptop. It costs $199.99 with a two-year contract and went on sale in June. The software update will be available immediately from HTC's site.

  HTC Touch - first impressions
"What are our first impressions about this phone - after having it for several hours and playing with it, after discussions with several HTC employees ? The fact is that HTC Touch doesn't support multi-touch - ability to detect touching of the screen in more than one place at the same time - but in reality it brings new touch screen technology! This new technology works in this way that it is able to detect whether screen is touched by finger (skin) or by stylus (plastic). When touched by finger and when various gestures are carried out then HTC's software is activated that not only is just a set of additional fancy-looking applications but also enhancements of Windows Mobile 6 so that new touch screen features can be used also in Microsoft's Windows Mobile applications. Shortly speaking now using a phone is becoming much more comfortable with use of just a touch screen (and one hand!) and even selecting small user interface elements is now more precise!" To recap, the diminutive 99.9 x 58 x 13.9-mm Touch runs Windows Mobile 6 with TouchFLO UI on a 2.8-inch display and OMAP850 processor while packing tri-band 900/1800/1900 GSM with EDGE, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, 1GB microSD expansion included, and a 2 megapixel cam."Via Engadget.

"High Tech Computer Corp. has signed an acquisition agreement with Dopod International to purchase the assets of nine Dopod subsidiaries, including Dopod Taiwan, Dopod Hong Kong, Dopod Singapore, Dopod Malaysia, Dopod Indonesia, Dopod Australia, Dopod Thailand, Dopod India, and Dopod Philippines.

  HTC S710 Vox first impressions

I've had the HTC S710 Vox for 2 days and wanted to post some first impressions.

Here's a quick rundown of the HTC S710 Vox specs:

Windows Mobile 6 Standard

TI's OMAP 850, 201 MHz processor

Memory: Rom:128MB RAM:64MB SDRAM

2.4" QVGA Transmissive LCD screen

Quad band GPRS + EDGE

802.11b/g WiFi

Bluetooth 2.0

Slide out QWERTY keyboard

2 mega-pixel camera (this camera is unbelievable, takes amazing pictures)

MicroSD expansion

1050mAh battery

******************************************************************************

First and foremost the HTC S710 Vox is a slick, solid, gorgeous smartphone. HTC did an amazing job with the build of this phone. It feels solid, it looks and feels like a luxury phone. HTC used the same soft-touch paint found on the T-Mobile Dash, and is outlined in a mirrored metal face, it's beautiful. While the smartphone is small in size, it's big in high end features. Just take a look at the above specs and you can't help but be impressed.

The screen is sharp and beautiful 2.4 " QVGA, which takes up most of the device. The screen is in portrait mode by default when the phone is in "candybar position", but once you slide it out the keyboard the screen it automatically flips to landscape (very slick).

HTC announced that they would be building their own smartphones under their name besides of making them for other companies. They've also started building their own applications. One of the first applications you'll notice is HTC's Audio Manager. You still get Windows Media on the HTC S710 Vox, but I prefer HTC's Audio Manager. It has some pretty cool features. One of my favorite is being able to set any song in my library as my ringtone, it couldn't be simpler.

HTC also added a note taking application called Quick Notes (most Windows Mobile Smartphones lack this kind of application ). Quick Notes does what the name implies, it allows you to make quick notes right on your Vox. You can decide the size of the font, and where you'd like to save your notes, either Phone memory, Storage Card, or Bluetooth (more about this later).

HTC has also added an application called Bluetooth Explorer which allows for Bluetooth file sharing with other Bluetooth Devices. Bluetooth Explorer searches for other Bluetooth devices that have file sharing enabled and lets you access their Bluetooth shared folder. You can copy files from and to their shared folder, and create subfolders in it. When you enable Bluetooth file sharing on your device , other Bluetooth-enabled devices will be able to access your Bluetooth shared folder. I have a Bluetooth folder setup on my iMac that lets my Vox access it and add or copy files to it. I can also do the reverse. Of course I have a security enabled on my Vox so no other Bluetooth-enabled device can access my Vox unless I provide them the pass key. This is such a cool and useful application.

In this first impression I wanted to touch on some of the cool HTC applications they've added to Windows Mobile 6 Standard. The HTC S710 Vox is one helluva smartphone. Windows Mobile 6 Standard runs pretty fast on it, and I am very impressed. Stay tuned for a more in-depth look at the HTC S710 Vox and how it compares to my other smartphones.
