San Francisco, CA -Toktumi, Inc., the leading provider of affordable phone services for small or home-based businesses, announced that the VoIP-enabled version of its calling app Line2, Version 2.0, has been approved by Apple and is now available on iTunes to new and existing customers.
Peter Sisson, Founder and CEO of Toktumi, said, "Line2 is a landmark application that will appeal to consumers and business people alike. For the first time, you can use your iPhone the same way, with the same number, whether placing or receiving calls over Wi-Fi, 3G, or Cellular Voice networks. If you live or work in a dead cell zone, or just want to reduce your cell bill, you are going to want Line2."
Mr. Sisson adds: "In the wake of the news that Verizon Wireless plans to put a crippled version of Skype on its phones, one that will not work over Wi-Fi, Line2 catapults AT&T to the front of the pack. The Line2 service is a huge win for AT&T's iPhone customers, and demonstrates both Apple's and AT&T's commitment to supporting next generation communications tools. I'm absolutely thrilled at their groundbreaking approval of the VoIP-enabled version of Line2 for iPhone and believe that history has been made today."
Line2's Wi-Fi capabilities allow international travelers to place and receive calls while overseas without incurring voice or data roaming charges. Using Line2, Calls to any number back home will be free, as will calls to other Line2 users, wherever they are worldwide. Calls to international numbers start at $0.02 per minute, whether calling from home or abroad.
Line2 is designed for professionals who can't afford to miss a call. It combines the best elements of Skype and Google Voice, but adds business grade features, reliability, and live customer support. There is no other calling app available on the iPhone or any other mobile device with the flexibility and features offered by Line2. Line2 detects the best available network based on customer preferences and places and receives calls over that network automatically. Advanced VoIP calling features include call waiting, call transfer, and conferences for up to 20 people - all without burning a single cellular minute. Wi-Fi call quality is better than cellular with Line2, and Wi-Fi calls between two Line2 customers use 16-bit HD audio for crystal clear sound quality that is stunning to experience.
Line2 is literally a second line on the iPhone, so that you have two numbers on one phone, each with its own voicemail, caller ID, and contacts. Business people can finally stop carrying around two phones, one for personal calls and one for work. Each Line2 number integrates with Toktumi's hosted PBX platform, providing office phone features like auto-attendant ("Press 1 for..."), call screening, caller-specific call forwarding, after-hours settings, voicemail by email, and PC-based calling, all integrated with the Line2 application. You can get just one line or set up an entire office, with all lines billed to one account and managed centrally.
Line2 is a $0.99 download that comes with 30 days of free service. After that, service costs just $14.95/month for unlimited US/Canada calling and access to all features. Line2 is now available in the App Store.

"AT&T announced today that iPhone users are using too much data on their network in larger cities such as New York and San Francisco. AT&T claims that the high bandwidth usage, brought on by iPhone users, is causing network issues, resulting in dropped calls, slow 3G network and/or problems connecting to the network at all.
AT&T recently launched an iPhone app to help consumers understand how much bandwidth and usage they have been using, in order to cut back on the amount of data they use. Consumers with the unlimited data plan may have to pay a penalty if they use more than 5GB a month soon. AT&T is thinking about making consumers who go over their 5GB allowance to pay a fee, depending on the extra usage."
"Operation Chokehold" is designed to protest and try to take down AT&T's network due to this ridiculous statement from AT&T that they may charge customers who use too much data under their "unlimited iPhone data plan". Isn't unlimited data, unlimited data??
***I don't think iPhone users should try and bring AT&T's network down in protest, but if AT&T is going to make such a ridiculous threat to their bread and butter iPhone customers they might have some repercussions...***

We know many of our iPhone customers are eager for an update on our rollout schedule for Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). We’ve been working for the past several months to prepare our systems and network to ensure the best possible experience with MMS when it launches – and that launch date is: September 25 for iPhone 3G and 3GS customers. MMS will be enabled through a software update on that day.
We know that iPhone users will embrace MMS. The unique capabilities and high usage of the iPhone’s multimedia capabilities required us to work on our network MMS architecture to carry the expected record volumes of MMS traffic and ensure an excellent experience from Day One. We appreciate your patience as we work toward that end.
We’re riding the leading edge of smartphone growth that’s resulted in an explosion of traffic over the AT&T network. Wireless use on our network has grown an average of 350 percent year-over-year for the past two years, and is projected to continue at a rapid pace in 2009 and beyond. The volume of smartphone data traffic the AT&T network is handling is unmatched in the wireless industry. We want you to know that we’re working relentlessly to innovate and invest in our network to anticipate this growth in usage and to stay ahead of the anticipated growth in data demand, new devices and applications for years to come.
We thank you for your business and look forward to keeping you updated on our initiatives.

An Update for our Customers
Some customers have had questions about our plans and policies for iPhone 3G S, and we’d like to provide you with answers. We’d also like to announce a change to the date when some iPhone customers are eligible for our best upgrade pricing to iPhone 3G S.
PRICING
Importantly, we want our customers to better understand our wireless device upgrade program. Like most U.S. carriers, we offer a variety of phones that we sell below our actual cost when customers agree to sign service agreements. In general, the more a customer spends with us, the quicker they become eligible for a price break on a new device. For example, iPhone customers who spend more than $99 a month per line with us generally are eligible for an upgrade between 12 and 18 months into their contract.
We also currently offer early upgrade pricing only for iPhone 3G S and iPhone 3G.
All of that said, we’ve been listening to our customers. And since many of our iPhone 3G customers are early adopters and literally weeks shy of being upgrade eligible due to iPhone 3G S launching 11 months after iPhone 3G, we’re extending the window of upgrade eligibility for a limited time.
We’re now pleased to offer our iPhone 3G customers who are upgrade eligible in July, August or September 2009 our best upgrade pricing, beginning Thursday, June 18.
If you’re one of the many customers who will benefit from this change, please note that our upgrade eligibility tools will reflect this change on Thursday, June 18.
We invite you to come to our stores beginning Friday during normal store hours, although please be aware that customer demand may exceed supply in some of our stores. You may also preorder online on June 18 at www.att.com/iPhone, and your iPhone 3G S will arrive in 7 — 14 days. Or you can purchase iPhone 3G S at Apple’s retail and online stores, as well as at other popular retailers.
If you’re one of the customers who benefits from this change, and you’ve already preordered from an AT&T store, we’ll adjust the price of the device when you pick it up. If you benefit from the change and you pre-ordered from AT&T online, we’ll send you an e-mail and issue you a credit.
If you pre-ordered an iPhone 3G S through Apple’s online store, your upgrade eligibility will be reassessed based on AT&T's new upgrade policy for iPhone 3G owners. If you are eligible for the lower price, Apple will issue you a credit for the difference as applicable.

Apple saw iPhones sales rise 123% year-on-year to 3.79m units on the back of broader availability worldwide, and this contributed to a leap in net profits by 15% to $1.21bn, from $1.05bn a year earlier. Total revenues were up 9% to $8.16bn from $7.51bn though it is hard to judge how much of that came from iPhones, as Apple reports these on a 'subscription-based' model, spread over the device's lifecycle of 24 months. Analysts estimate about $1.5bn, with a margin (also undisclosed by Apple) that is higher than its other hardware products." Via rethinkwireless.com .

NEW YORK (AP) — AT&T Inc. said Thursday it will start selling iPhones without requiring a two-year contract, but they will cost $400 more.
Spokesman Michael Coe said AT&T will sell the phones starting next Thursday for $599 or $699, depending on the storage capacity. The two models cost $199 or $299 under contract.
The phone company had said in July, when the latest version of the iPhone was launched, that it would sell contract-free phones in the United States. Such phones are sold in some other countries.
The new phones will still be "locked" to AT&T and won't work with any other cellular carrier unless they're modified. AT&T will only activate them on the regular iPhone plans, which include a $30 monthly charge for data access. Prepaid service will not be available.
Apple Inc., the maker of the iPhone, has been selling the device from its stores and Web site, but would not say if it would sell the contract-free version.
Apple is widely expected to release a new version of the phone this summer.
Looks like AT&T is trying to clear out inventory of the iPhone 3G to make room for the next iPhone expected in the summer when Apple releases iPhone OS 3.0
The presentation by Greg Joswiak, Apple's VP of product marketing for iPods and iPhones, also detailed that Apple has shipped 800,000,000 apps from iTunes in the first eight months, which is well ahead of the previous pace to reach a billion apps in its first year. In comparison, it took Apple two years to reach its first billion song downloads." Via AppleInsider .

"Your application duplicates the functionality of the built-in iPhone application Mail without providing sufficient differentiation or added functionality, which will lead to user confusion."
The jailbreaking community has actually grown since Apple began allowing 3rd party applications to run on the iPhone OS. Cydia , the installer app that runs on jailbroken iPhones and iPod touch has announced that beginning today Cydia is opening its own App Store where developers will be able to sell and distribute their applications.
This news will definitely anger Apple, but hopefully it'll show them that developers and customers want to be able to create and purchase applications that add functionality not allowed or available due to Apple's choosing.

iPod Sales Set New Record
CUPERTINO, California—January 21, 2009—Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2009 first quarter ended December 27, 2008. The Company posted record revenue of $10.17 billion and record net quarterly profit of $1.61 billion, or $1.78 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $9.6 billion and net quarterly profit of $1.58 billion, or $1.76 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 34.7 percent, equal to the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 46 percent of the quarter’s revenue.
In accordance with the subscription accounting treatment required by GAAP, the Company recognizes revenue and cost of goods sold for iPhone™ and Apple TV® over their economic lives. Adjusting GAAP sales and product costs to eliminate the impact of subscription accounting, the corresponding non-GAAP measures* for the quarter are $11.8 billion of “Adjusted Sales” and $2.3 billion of “Adjusted Net Income.”
Apple sold 2,524,000 Macintosh® computers during the quarter, representing nine percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold a record 22,727,000 iPods during the quarter, representing three percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Quarterly iPhone units sold were 4,363,000, representing 88 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter.
“Even in these economically challenging times, we are incredibly pleased to report our best quarterly revenue and earnings in Apple history—surpassing $10 billion in quarterly revenue for the first time ever,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO.
“Our outstanding results generated over $3.6 billion in cash during the quarter,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO. “Looking ahead to the second fiscal quarter of 2009, we expect revenue in the range of about $7.6 billion to $8 billion and we expect diluted earnings per share in the range of about $.90 to $1.00.”

Copy and Paste wasn't a high priority for Apple in the iPhone OS, but it's a feature that many people need in a smartphone. Under the terms of the deal, song prices will be broken down into three categories--older songs from the catalog, midline songs (newer songs that aren't big hits), and current hits--said one of the sources. Apple has offered songs free of digital rights management protections from EMI for more than a year. But EMI accounts for less than 10 percent of music sold in the U.S.; these new deals will expand iTunes' DRM-free library to include songs from the other three major labels (Sony BMG, Universal, and Warner Music).
Apple and the music labels have also apparently come to terms on over-the-air downloads, according to a source. That would allow iPhone owners to download songs to their mobile devices via cell networks and without the aid of Wi-Fi. 1. BlackBerry Bold
"Despite the buzz and momentum building around the iPhone, BlackBerry remains the predominant smartphone platform for the enterprise, especially in security-sensitive environments such as government and the financial sector. BlackBerry’s backend infrastructure simply offers IT a lot more security and control - albeit at an extra premium for BlackBerry Enterprise Servers (BES). With the BlackBerry Bold, Resaerch in Motion has brought its smartphone to the forefront with 3G, Wi-Fi, a high quality 480×320 screen, a 624 MHz processor, and a bunch of memory space. This device features top performance combined with all of the familiarity and manageability of the BlackBerry platform. While the BlackBerry Storm, which was released around the same time, has gotten a lot of the attention because of its touch screen, for hard-core business users, the BlackBerry Bold is now the most powerful smartphone that money can buy."
The iPhone 3G took the 3rd spot.
3. Apple iPhone 3G
"The iPhone is one of only three products that made this list for the second straight year. Last year it made the list because of its revolutionary screen and interface that made Web browsing fully usable for the first time on a smartphone. While the interface has continued to improve with software updates, the second generation iPhone made this year’s list because of the enterprise-grade capabilities that Apple brought to the iPhone in 2008, including Exchange ActiveSync support and remote kill capability for IT. It remains the best-designed and easiest-to-use smartphone on the market, and so far it has helped increase the overall smartphone market."

SAN JOSE, Calif., December 17, 2008 – iambic, Inc., a leading provider of innovative productivity-enhancing software, today unveiled its first iPhone App, SnappySeeker, a super efficient way for users to launch Internet searches with just one tap. This app, formerly known as GoogHelper, has an easy-to-use interface that can accommodate searches in 15 different categories. With the addition of the iPhone, SnappySeeker is now available for popular smartphone devices including the BlackBerry, the Palm Centro/Treo, the T-Mobile G1 running Google Android, and cell phones running Windows Mobile.
“As we expanded the availability of this handy app across more platforms and listened to the feedback from our customers, we realized that the name GoogHelper was a bit too narrowly focused,” said Adriano Chiaretta, COO of iambic, Inc. “The new name, SnappySeeker, is actually more reflective of our business philosophy – to focus on creating apps that can be easily tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual, are intuitive to use, and introduce fun ways to get more done.”
Along with reducing the number of taps it takes to find what you are looking for, SnappySeeker is designed to take advantage of Google Maps as well as the mobile device’s SMS/text messaging capabilities, to send searches to the Google SMS service for immediate results.
In particular, the iPhone version features integrated browsing capabilities and a “touch & scroll” navigation bar which enables users to obtain results across multiple search providers (such as Amazon, Flickr, Technorati, Wikipedia, eBay) in seconds.
Availability and Pricing:
The iPhone version of SnappySeeker can be obtained from Apple’s iPhone App Store at the introductory price of $0.99. It appears in the Productivity category.
SnappySeeker is also available on Palm OS, Windows Mobile (Pocket PC and Smartphone Edition), BlackBerry and the Android platforms. It can be downloaded directly from iambic ( www.iambic.com ) or from partner sites, including Handango, Handmark and Mobihand.
"If you made it through the fine print, you may have noticed that there are now 10,000 applications available for iPhone and the iPod Touch available on the App Store. Nothing new there, either," Goldman reports.
"What is new, and absolutely stunning, is the small print at the bottom of today's ad. Apple now says that iPhone users have 'downloaded over 300 million' applications from the App Store, from games to business programs. Why is that stunning? Consider that on the company's conference call on October 22, Apple disclosed that the following day, Apple expected users to download their 200 millionth app. Which means, as of today, users have downloaded a staggering 100 million apps in just the past 6 weeks," Goldman reports.
"So all that talk of a 'bubble' in apps demand was just that, talk! Experts expected an initial big shot in the arm, and that demand would trail off as the weeks passed by. These figures suggest that the app store is only gaining momentum, and it's another big reason for users to choose iPhone over Research in Motion's BlackBerry," Goldman reports.

Nokia's share of the market for smartphones -- handsets with computer-like features like e-mail -- fell to 38.9 percent in the quarter from 51.4 percent a year before, Canalys said.
However, Apple's market share jumped to 17.3 percent and RIM's to 15.2 percent in the quarter.
"The introduction of the iPhone 3G in July and Apple's expansion into many more countries helped propel the vendor to second place globally," Canalys said in a statement."
AppleInsider is reporting new features seen in the upcoming iPhone 2.2 OS.
"A series of screenshots from Apple's latest iPhone 2.2 beta have leaked on the web, revealing a new interface for downloading podcasts over wireless networks and a more polished version of the handset's App Store application.
Direct Podcast Downloads The screenshots, published by the German-langue blog Flo's Weblog, appear to confirm reports that the next software update for the iPhone will allow users to grab podcasts from the mobile iTunes Store over the handset's 3G connection."
The study, now in its second year, measures business customer satisfaction with wireless smartphones—defined as mobile phones offering advanced capabilities and personal computer-like functionality—such as a BlackBerry or Treo. Overall satisfaction is measured across five key factors. In order of importance, they are: ease of operation (27%); operating system (24%); physical design (21%); handset features (18%); and battery aspects (10%).
Apple ranks highest in overall smartphone customer satisfaction with a score of 778 on a 1,000-point scale, performing particularly well in the ease of operation, physical design and handset feature factors. BlackBerry manufacturer RIM (703) and Samsung (701) follow Apple in the rankings.
“With the introduction of the iPhone in 2007, Apple has clearly differentiated itself from the competition in areas that are most important to business smartphone users,” said Kirk Parsons, senior director of wireless services for J.D. Power and Associates. “By making basic applications and features easy to use and providing functionality in a thin, lightweight device, Apple has performed well in exceeding customer expectations.”

"At the Web 2.0 Summit today, AT&T Mobility President/CEO Ralph De La Vega has said that wireless modem tethering will be available "soon."
I just got this text message from AT&T. AT&T had officially announced free AT&T Wi-Fi access for iPhone customers.
Gizmodo is reporting that Google has released Google Earth for iPhone. It's free and available in the App Store now.
Here's the iTunes link for Google Earth .
Cnet has put together a video showing how 3G speed compares on an iPhone 3G and the T-Mobile G1. I have both phones and performed the same test the day I received my G1. My results were the same as cnet, and the results are pretty interesting. Check out the above video to see it with your own eyes.

I wanted to post some iPhone 3G and T-Mobile G1 comparison pics.
The G1 is turning out to be a very impressive device even compared to the iPhone 3G (I wasn't sure it would be). The T-Mobile G1 is the first device to run Google's Android OS, and let me tell you it doesn't disappoint. In terms of 3G network speed, the 3G on the G1 (say that 3 times fast) is beating the iPhone's 3G speeds in my area, it's very fast. I've had the G1 for less than 24 hours so stay tuned !
The app is launching with 10 terrestrial stations, including Top 40s WHTZ/New York and KIIS/Los Angeles, Sports KFAN/Minneapolis, News/Talk KTRH/Houston, and Alternative WWDC/Washington. Internet stations erockster and Pride Radio are also available.
According to a memo to Clear Channel Online Music & Radio staffers from EVP Evan Harrison, the application will add a few new stations every week, and the next version of will "likely" launch this year.
The app is named after Clear Channel's beta music site at www.iheartradio.com, which offers station streams, videos, and other music and info features.
The 3G iPhone has helped Apple add market share quickly. Before the launch of the device, iPhone sales represented 11 percent of the consumer market for smartphones. After the launch of the 3G iPhone Apple had 17 percent of the market share.
During June through August 2008, the top four best-selling smartphones based on sales to consumers were the Apple iPhone 3G, the Blackberry Curve, the BlackBerry Pearl and the Palm Centro, says NPD." Via Wired .

Today Apple announced the Apple Ultracompact USB Power Adapter Exchange program.
Apple has determined that under certain conditions the new ultracompact Apple USB power adapter's metal prongs can break off and remain in a power outlet, creating a risk of electric shock. We have received reports of detached blades involving a very small percentage of the adapters sold, but no injuries have been reported.
The ultracompact USB power adapters were supplied with every iPhone 3G.
Customer safety is always Apple's top priority, and therefore we have voluntarily decided to exchange every ultracompact power adapter for a new, redesigned adapter, free of charge.
Users with ultracompact power adapters should immediately stop using them until they exchange them for a new, redesigned ultracompact adapter.
In the meantime, they should charge their iPhone 3G by connecting it to their computer with the USB cable that came with their iPhone or by using a standard-sized Apple USB Power Adapter (with fold up prongs) or with a third party adapter designed to work with the iPhone, such as a car charger.
Apple will be exchanging replacement adapters @ Apple Retail Stores and allowing customers to order a replacement through its online support beginning October 9, 2008.

"Addition released their application iPhoneModem Saturday through the MMi Cydia source. They describe it as "an application for the iPhone that aims at making it really easy to use the iPhone's internet connection on your computer," and they deliver.
iPhoneModem makes tethering a 10 second process. For those of you running OS X Leopard (iPhoneModem is actively working on the desktop client for MacOS 10.4 and Microsoft Windows, as well as a 1.x iPhone version of the app), you simply install their Leopard app (200kb .dmg direct download), open it, and press connect. This will automatically create an ad-hoc network named iPhoneModem on your Mac." To get more information about iPhoneModem head over to ModMyiFone .
That was fast! Apple released the iPhone 2.1 firmware yesterday and the iPhone Dev Team has just released the Pwnage Tool and QuickPwn to allow jailbreaking on firmware 2.1. I used it on my iPhone 3G and it was a success.
To our surprise, the iPhone OS 2.1 upgrade was fast, and after using Backup Disabler to switch on backups again, our first backup with 72 apps took "dramatically" less time than before, at just two minutes. Subsequent backups finish in mere seconds. Chalk that thorn in our side bug fix up as a win.
Overall, most of the things that Apple said should be faster are indeed faster. Installing apps is quicker than ever, and we don't see the traditional installation hang when the process is 95 percent completed. We haven't had a chance to put every one of our apps through extensive tests just yet, but games and other apps that frequently crashed before are performing much better so far." As promised, Apple has released the iPhone 2.1 Software Update today. You can get it through iTunes.
“iPhone’s unique capabilities, easy SDK and the ability to reach an audience of millions via the App Store made this an easy development choice for us,” said John Pollard, Jott CEO. “To date, we’ve had hundreds of thousands of downloads of Jott for iPhone, which has been a major win for our company.”
“Because I already had a full-time job I used the iPhone SDK to create Trisim in my spare time and in my wildest dreams I never expected this kind of result,” said Steve Demeter, founder of Demiforce. “Selling over 27,000 downloads in the first three weeks means I now have a significant new income stream and some exciting career choices that I didn’t have a couple of months ago.”
“As an 18 year old iPhone Developer Program member I won an Apple WWDC student scholarship and used the opportunity to complete my app over the summer,” said Bryan Henry, developer of Equivalence. “It was a lot of fun to pull it together and certainly the most lucrative summer job I’ve ever had as I made over $8,000 in my first month of App Store sales.”
“Our new account registrations on the App Store are 300 percent better than all our other registration avenues combined,” said Chris MacAskill, SmugMug’s co-founder. “We’ve been able to do things with our iPhone app that we just couldn’t have dreamed of doing on any other mobile platform, so these are revolutionary times for us and for iPhone and iPod touch users.”
The cited source said, “In [AT&T 3G] UMTS, power control is key to the mobile and network success. If the UE [phone set] requires too much downlink power then the base station or Node B can run out of transmitter power and this is what was happening. As you get more UEs on the cell, the noise floor rises and the cell has to compensate by ramping up its power to the UEs.”
“The power control issue will also have an effect on the data throughput," the source said, "because the higher the data rate the more power the Node B transmitter requires to transmit. If the UEs have poor power control and are taking more power than is necessary then it will sap the network’s ability to deliver high speed data.”
The source added that the issue had compelled AT&T to send iPhone 3G users an SMS text message about the availability of the new iPhone 2.0.2 software, and that, "In a mixed environment where users are running 2.0, 2.0.1, and 2.0.2, the power control problems of 2.0 and 2.0.1 will affect the 2.0.2 users.” Via AppleInsider .
"It took Apple nearly a year to sell 6 million first generation iPhones. A million 3Gs were sold in the first weekend the device was on sale—it took Apple 74 days to sell a million of the first gen iPhones," Arrington writes.
"According to our sources, Foxconn continues to build iPhones for Apple at the rate of 800,000 units per week, with production ramping up as fast as possible. (Businesweek is hearing similar numbers from its sources—150,000 a day). Apple is on pace to sell more than 40 million of the devices in the next year," Arrington writes. Via MacDailyNews .

Regarding its projected volume, Apple so far has only stated that it wants to turn over at least 10 million devices in the current calendar year. Even with its total of a billion new phones Apple still only has a humble share of the worldwide mobile phone market. In order to achieve its ambitious plans, the company has expanded its distribution network, now offering the iPhone in chain stores – for instance, at Best Buy in the US and at Media-Saturn Holding stores in Germany. In the UK the sales expansion is modest; the iPhone is available from the original network supplier O2, mobile specialists the Carphone Warehouse and from the sixteen Apple Retail stores located in major population centres across the country."

Ubergizmo has posted some leaked shots of the Nike+ interface for iPhone & iPod touch. Currently the iPod nano is the only device that works with Nike+. It'll be very cool to have all your user information and graphs on your iPhone or iPod touch, it should keep ya motivated.
***UPDATE*** AppleInsider has confirmed the above pictures are fake. Apple hasn't given developers a program interface to access music on the iPhone. Also notice Coldplay's song "Violent Hill", it's really "Violet Hill".

Apple has released iPhone firmware 2.0.2 for iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPod touch. Apple has only listed "bug fixes" in the description. Stay tuned.
As of Friday, 8 Aug, there were 1,647 applications officially available for the iPhone. Many downloads are free, but the first month saw $30m in paid-for software sales. The store is having a wider impact on download pricing too. When the store opened in early July the popular market price for a program was $9.99. In the month following the prices have dropped so far that many are now 99 cents, and even popular games are now debuting at this price." Via The Register .
"Our 25 hours of counting iPhone sales in Apple retail stores throughout the country lead us to believe Apple is on pace to beat our previous estimate of 4.1 million iPhones for the September quarter," analyst Gene Munster advised clients in a report Wednesday.
He now estimates that the electronics maker will sell at least 4.47 million iPhones in the quarter, compared to 1.12 million during the same three-month period last year. More specifically, he estimates that Apple sells an average of 95 iPhone 3Gs per day at each of its 188 U.S. retail stores, up from 21 phones per day during a similar check in August of 2007." Via AppleInsider .
This application is awesome! SimplifyMedia is offering the application for free to the first 100,000 downloads, and then will be $3.99 afterwards. I'd recommend getting this app while you can because there's a good chance Apple is going to pull it from the App Store.
"Business Week is reporting that, according to its sources, Infineon's chip inside the iPhone 3G is the root cause of the reception problems that numerous iPhone 3G owners have reported over the last month. Nomura Securities analyst Richard Windsor first suggested Infineon was to blame in a research note earlier this week.
The good news, however, is that apparently Apple believes it can fix the problems with a software upgrade, according to Business Week. A Swedish researcher who had discovered sensitivity issues in the iPhone 3G's chipset thought the problems would have to be solved through some sort of recall, but Apple and Infineon are said to be testing a software update that could be released perhaps as early as the end of this month." The blistering sales pace of Apple's new gadget defies the otherwise downward trends in consumer spending, employment levels and overall economic health. The 3 million figure is much higher than Wall Street analysts had anticipated. Forecasts called for total quarterly sales of three million to four million.
Three days after the new iPhone's July 11 debut, Apple announced that it had sold 1 million iPhones. For comparison, it took 74 days for the original iPhone to hit the one million sold mark. The new 3G iPhone has already sold nearly half as many as the original iPhones in total." Via Fortune .
In the month since Apple opened an online software clearinghouse called the App Store, users have downloaded more than 60 million programs for the iPhone, Chief Executive Steve Jobs said in an interview at Apple's headquarters. While most of those applications were free, Apple sold an average of $1 million a day in applications for a total of about $30 million in sales over the month, Mr. Jobs said." "We’ve just had word that our friends at RiPDev almost have Installer 4 (Beta) ready for public beta release, with that awesome news we’ve decided to include it in the PwnageTool 2.0.2 release, we are waiting for the software from them and we need to quickly test and add a small couple of changes that go alongside Installer.
Usually we don’t give release dates, this is so we don’t feel pressured into releasing something if it isn’t ready, or we can hold off if something comes up in the last minute (last time this was the addition of the 3G jailbreak), today we thought we were releasing, and you guys seemed restless (we read the comments) so we said “sometime today”.
We think the Installer 4 beta is big news, and I’m sure lots of you guys want it and because of this the release should now take place sometime tomorrow (Friday), we want to do all this in one hit, we don’t want to make two releases in two day."
