The iPhone Dev Team has released the Pwnage Tool 2.0 . The tool will allow you to jailbreak and install 3rd party apps on iPhone, iPod touch, and iPhone 3G running 2.0 firmware.
Gizmodo is reporting that the iPhone Dev Team has announced that the Pwnage Tool that will be released very soon will not unlock the iPhone 3G. The good news is the tool will be able to Jailbreak the iPhone 3G, allowing you to run 3rd party applications as well as the App Store. The original iPhone with firmware 2.0 installed will be able to be unlocked and Jailbroken.
The iPhone Dev Team has posted a screenshot of the very soon to be released Pwnage Tool. As you can see from the above screenshot the Pwnage Tool will support the 1st iPhone, iPod touch, and iPhone 3G. The. Pwnage Tool will allow you to run jaibreak apps as well as the ability to still run applications from the App Store.
Starting earlier this afternoon I've been trying to purchase the 2.0 software for my 16GB iPod touch since 5pm. Each time I click on the "Buy the Software Update" link I get dropped into the home page of the iTunes Store.
Apple fan site, AppleInsider.com has been reporting a number of problems with the iTunes servers bogging down under the stress of all the new iPhone activations and updates to existing iPhone 1.0 devices.
I'll update this article as soon as I'm able to purchase, download, and apply the iPod touch 2.0 software.
UPDATE 9:20pm:
I just clicked the "Check for Update" button in iTunes with my iPod touch selected in the Source side bar and received the dreaded, "This version of the iPod software (1.1.4) is the current version" message that I received at 6:30am before Apple released the 2.0 software. It looks like it is going to be a long weekend for Apple and their customers. At least I don't have to work overtime tonight.
UPDATE 10:40pm
Not wanting to give up on my iPod touch OCD, I just checked the update status again, and I received a message reading:
"The iTunes Store is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later."
Maybe a fix is on the way?
UPDATE 10:20am - 7/12/08:
What a difference 12 hours makes! The iPod touch 2.0 software update is ready to roll!
"If you were wondering how I was doing push email tests on iPhone OS 2.0 and Vodafone UK, this is the reason why. The code wizard commandos at the iPhone Dev Team have been working on this non-stop since the early days of beta testing. In fact, I had iPhone OS 2.0 running on my iPhone since last week. That was version 5A345, two below 5A347, but identical in functionality.
Now that the official iPhone OS 2.0 is out, the iPhone Dev Team will release their Pwnage tool for everyone to unlock and jailbreak their iPhones soon."
Here's Gizmodo's video of MobileMe's Push Mail on an unlocked & Jailbroken iPhone 2.0 . Who would have thought 2.0 would be jailbroken and unlocked already???
I was just browsing the applications that are available in the App Store and all I can say is WOW!!! The quality and quantity of applications on day 1 is simply amazing. I was actually surprised that there were so many FREE applications. If you're familiar with iTunes (at this point who isn't?), you'll feel right at home in the AppStore. As part of the iPhone 2.0 software you'll be able to access the App Store right from your device using the iPhone 3G's network, and the iPhone and iPod touch's WiFi connection (no need to connect to a computer). If you don't have an iPhone or iPod touch I can almost guarantee you'll want one after looking through the App Store.
"Apple's highly anticipated iPhone App Store launched earlier this morning, spawning a user-generated list of the most popular applications available at no cost. This article previews the top 10 with links, descriptions, and screenshots."
NEW YORK – July 10, 2008 – AOL today announced three new iPhone OS applications: AIM, the leading instant messaging service; AOL Radio, the most popular online radio service and recent recipient of an Apple Design Award; and Truveo, the leading video search engine are available as free downloads from the Apple App Store beginning today.
“With AIM, AOL Radio and Truveo for the iPhone, consumers now have access to the world’s largest instant messaging network, over 350 streaming radio stations and millions of online videos,” said Kevin Conroy, Executive Vice President of AOL. “Over the past twelve months, AOL has revitalized its Mac development efforts and we’re thrilled to be bringing our world-class communications and multi-media experiences to iPhone users around the world via the App Store.”
The new AIM, AOL Radio and Truveo applications for the iPhone were built using Apple’s iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK) and provide users a rich, full-featured experience, with added features unique to the iPhone.
* AIM for iPhone brings together all of the core features of AIM – such as real-time communication, the Buddy List window and the ability to see when friends and contacts are online and available to chat – and combines them with a host of new capabilities that make IM’ing from the iPhone easy and convenient, whether over a Wi-Fi, EDGE, or 3G network.
AIM has been designed from the ground up to take advantage of the iPhone’s unique user interface and advanced capabilities. New features developed specifically for the iPhone include the use of Gestures, which allows users to simply tap to start a new message or to swipe a finger to switch between conversations; Favorites, which puts the buddies with whom you keep in touch at your fingertips; and the ability to easily incorporate a photo taken with the iPhone's built in camera as a Buddy Icon. AIM for iPhone will be available to users worldwide.
* AOL Radio for iPhone gives users in the U.S. immediate, free access to more than 350 best-in-breed stations including more than 150 local CBS RADIO stations and custom channels and more than 200 AOL Radio stations spanning 25 musical genres. AOL Radio for iPhone leverages the iPhone’s Core Location framework to detect a user's location and automatically displays CBS RADIO stations nearest to the user. Additionally, AOL Radio for iPhone automatically adapts to the current connection speed of the device providing low-bandwidth streams when on a cellular network versus higher quality audio for Wi-Fi connections.
At Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference in June, AOL Radio was highlighted during the iPhone Developer Showcase and received the Apple Design Award for “Best Entertainment Application.”
* Truveo Mobile Video Search for iPhone maximizes the device’s premium video experience and makes it easy for users to search and browse through millions of online videos while on the go. Truveo’s leading video search engine provides direct links to video content that’s been optimized for the iPhone from a wide variety of video sources including CNN, Discovery Channel, HBO, NBC, PBS, Channel, Comedy Central, MTV and YouTube. Localized versions of Truveo Mobile Video Search for iPhone will be available for the U.S., Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, New Zealand, and the UK, with support for additional countries to follow in the coming months.
All three applications are available for free from Apple’s App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore/
More information on AIM, AOL Radio and Truveo Mobile Video Search for iPhone can be found at http://mobile.aol.com/iphone .
In addition to the AIM, AOL Radio and Truveo applications for the iPhone, AOL has also optimized many of its popular websites and services for the iPhone’s Safari browser including; AOL.com, AOL Mail, AOL Mobile Search, AOL Money & Finance, Moviefone, AOL Food, AOL Horoscopes, AOL TV Listings and AOL Shopping.
"Apple finally let developers know when their iPhone apps will be live on the App Store for users to download and use: around 9 am PST Thursday morning. That, at least, is when the embargo lifts and press can start writing about the specific applications. Presumably the App Store will go live, along with iPhone 2.0 software in general, around that time."
Google has released an iPhone version of Google Talk.
"Our new version of Google Talk is designed specifically for the iPhone and runs in the iPhone’s browser, so you don’t need to download or install anything. Just visit www.google.com/talk on your iPhone, sign in, and start chatting."

MacRumors is reporting that Apple has released a pre-release version of iTunes 7.7 for developers tonight. The Read Me of the installer lists:
"Use iTunes 7.7 to sync music, video, and more with iPhone 3G, and download applications from the iTunes Store exclusively designed for iPhone and iPod touch with software version 2.0 or later. Also use the new Remote application for iPhone or iPod touch to control iTunes playback from anywhere in your home -- a free download from the App Store."
Of course it's not completely free as iPod touch users will have to pay $9.99 to upgrade to the 2.0 software (iPhone owners get this update for free), but still a very nice added benefit to doing so.
Sprint's President and CEO Dan Hesse announced that Sprint would be launching their WiMax service in September and would be offering their "iPhone killer", the Instinct to Sprint customers first.
"Hesse said the Samsung Instinct handset, an iPhone-like device he unveiled at the CTIA Wireless show in April, will hit the market Friday. It will be available first to Sprint's current customers -- demonstrating, Hesse said, that "Sprint, from now on, will place our current customers first." The company has been plagued by a reputation for poor customer service and has been losing subscribers."
Sprint is banking on the Instinct, they've launched a $100 million marketing campaign comparing the Instinct to the iPhone. The problem is all the ads show the Instinct going head to head against the 1st (no longer available) iPhone not the iPhone 3G (whoops).
Sprint also just announced that they'd be offering the Instinct for $129.99 instead of the original $199.99 price. Can't blame 'em for cutting the price, they need to shoot new ads;)
On tonight's premier episode of Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List, Steve Wozniak hacked Kathy's iPhone using AppSnap while on their way to the Producer Guild Awards.
San Francisco, CA -- (June 12, 2008) – AOL announced that the company was recognized with an Apple Design Award for the development of AOL Radio for iPhone. The AOL developed application was highlighted during the "iPhone Developer Showcase" portion of the annual awards ceremony last night at Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco and won the award for "Best Entertainment Application".
Built using Apple’s Beta iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK), the new application gives users immediate, free access to over 350 online radio stations, including 150 local CBS RADIO stations and custom channels plus more than 200 AOL Radio channels. The AOL Radio iPhone application will be available as a free download with the launch of Apple's App Store.
“We’re thrilled to be recognized by Apple for the work that has gone into AOL Radio for the iPhone,” said Kevin Conroy, Executive Vice President, AOL. "The API's available in the iPhone SDK provided us with all the tools necessary to quickly create a terrific version of AOL Radio for the iPhone OS and we're looking forward to adding streaming radio to the many great experiences available to iPhone users."
AOL Radio gives iPhone users immediate, free access to hundreds of best in breed stations including over 200 stations spanning 25 genres of music and an extensive collection of popular CBS RADIO programing, including WFAN-AM and 1010 WINS in New York, KLSX and KROQ in Los Angeles, WXRT in Chicago, and WVEE in Atlanta. In addition, AOL Radio’s 200-plus stations span 25 musical genres, including Awesome 80’s, Fresh 100, and Classic Rock.
AOL Radio for iPhone leverages iPhone’s Core Location framework to detect a user's location and automatically display CBS RADIO stations nearest to the user. Additionally, AOL Radio for iPhone automatically adapts to the current connection speed of the device providing low-bandwidth streams when on a cellular network versus higher quality audio for WiFi connections.
The award represents a significant milestone in AOL’s efforts to “get back to the Mac.” Over the past year, AOL reinvested in the Mac platform, creating new mobile and desktop experiences for the iPhone, iPod Touch and Macintosh computer. Using Apple’s tools and SDKs, as well as working closely with Apple’s design and development teams, AOL has launched a series of new applications including AOL Mobile Search, an optimized AOL.com portal and AOL Desktop for Mac.
**Update** Just got an email from AOL that the AOL Radio App will be available for FREE on launch day of the App Store.

Unless Apple's Australian iPod touch page made a huge mistake, it looks like the App Store will be available on June 27th. This also means that the iPhone 2.0 Firmware will also be released that day. Stay tuned.

"How does the iPhone 3G tackle these things? Let's take a look at 3G. Why do you want 3G? Faster data downloads, right? There's nowhere that you want it more than the browser and downloading email. First, the browser..."
"Improved audio, it's really, really great... and it feels even better in your hand, if you can believe it."
"Flush headphone jack."
"Solid metal buttons, the same gorgeous 3.5-inch display, camera"
"We've learned so much with the first iPhone. We've taken everything we've learned and more and created the iPhone 3G. It's beautiful. This is what it looks like. "Black back! "Thinner at the edges. Full plastic back, it's really nice."
2G talk time is up from 8 hours to 10 hours. 3G talk time... other phones have 3 - 3.5 hours, we've managed 5 hours of 3G talk time, which is an industry-leading amount of time."
Browsing, 5-6 hours of high speed browsing. Video - 7 hours, audio - 24 hours." Big applause.
Location services is going to be a really big deal on the iPhone -- you saw a bit of that here today, it's going to explode. We get location from celltowers, from WiFi, and now we get it from GPS.
I'm happy to tell you the 8GB will sell for $199.
16GB model for $299 -- for that model we have a white one.
"70 countries this year. We're going to start with 22 of the biggest, rolling out the iPhone 3G at the same time in all of these countries. July 11." Via Engadget .

"Go to any browser, type me.com. Simple, easy to remember. Log in... you get an incredibly rich email client. It feels like a desktop."
Mail, contacts, calendar -- all this stuff looks exactly like Apple's native apps. This is pretty nice." Via Engadget .
"MobileMe stores your info up in the cloud so you can get to it anywhere using any of your devices -- Mac, PC, iPhone -- it will push information up and down to keep everything up to date all the time.
Push email, contacts, and calendars... everything is up to date wherever you are.
- "It works with the native apps on my Mac or PC -- it works with Mail.app, iCal, Address Book... as well as Outlook. You'd expect that it would work with those native apps."
Example of email -- gets pushed down to all devices. Change a contact? Gets pushed up to MobileMe, down to all other device. "The best part of this, it works over the air. Everything is up to date." Via Engadget's coverage of WWDC '08 .
Apple is obviously getting ready to release something worldwide, the online Apple Store is currently down worldwide. Could the rumors be true of a worldwide launch of the 3G iPhone? ;)
Engadget has been shown a "proof-of-concept" version of SlingPlayer for the iPhone and iPod touch. The problem is Apple hasn't accepted Sling into the iPhone developer program. It looks like Apple's walled garden, I mean "App Store" might not let developers in who might compete with iTunes. Why would you buy an episode of your favorite show from iTunes when you could stream it from your SlingPlayer to your iPhone for free?

CrunchGear has tons of pictures of what they're claiming is the real 3G iPhone. According to the pictures from the Apple & or AT&T promotional material the new iPhone will be available in black, as well as a red version for Product (RED).
If this is legit, the new iPhone will be thinner than the original, same screen size as the original, have tapered edges similar to the MacBook Air, and will also include a front facing camera for iChat AV.
According to the promotional material it says:
"Video just became a little more fun. Start a real time video chat with other AT&T subscribers via 3G networking, or with iChat buddies via WiFi. The video calling revolution has begun."
The promotional material also shows that Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista will be required to use iChat. CrunchGear believes that Apple will be launching a version of iChat for Windows just like they did with Safari.
Check out CrunchGear for more pictures and updates.
This could turn out to be a fake, but we only have 2 days to go before Steve Jobs shows the world the real deal, so hang in there iPhone fan boys!!

"Late yesterday afternoon MacTalk received the above photo from a very reliable source who can not be named for obvious reasons (fear of assassination by the Apple Secret Police I presume). Word on the street is that resellers across the country have also received similar packages. As seen by the picture, it's contents are protected under NDA until Tuesday June 10 - does that date ring a bell to anyone? Our source strongly believes that the package contains the much coveted 3G iPhone. Why is there only one and why is it here early though? Our source believes that the iPhone contained within is for promotional purposes, ie. after it's official unveiling at WWDC next week." Via MacTalk .
How long do you think it would take you to open this box if you received it, and it was really from Apple?;)
CrunchGear has posted the first images of the banners being hung for the WWDC 08 at the Moscone Theater.
"The Leopard banner reads: “The world’s most advanced Operating System.” The iPhone banner reads: “The world’s most advanced mobile platform.” The iPhone banner also shows "The Future Calling" on the iPhone's screen.
The mobile operator and exclusive provider for Apple's iPhone in the US said the upgrades are results of recent network enhancements, including the deployment of High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) technology across all existing 3G markets that is expected to be completed by the end of the month.
Customers on the network should now achieved download speeds between 700 Kbps (kilobits per second) and 1.7 Mbps (megabits per second), up from 600 Kbps to 1.4 Mbps. Meanwhile, upload speeds should jump to the 500 Kbps - 1.2 Mbps range, up from 500 to 800 Kbps.
The announcement comes just days before Apple is expected to take the wraps off its next-generation iPhone handset which is widely expected to leverage 3G networks worldwide." Via AppleInsider .
AppleInsider is reporting that the first third-party native iPhone applications will be ready Monday (iPhone OS 2.0 would have to be released Monday for this to happen).
Apple will announce immediate availability of the new iPhone for some regions next week.
Here's to hoping these rumors are facts come Monday.
Apple will stop selling the .Mac service, existing .Mac users will have their @mac.com email addresses forwarded to @me.com.
"MobileMe is slated to include a host of new features, in addition, there will be new web interfaces for all aspects of MobileMe -- calendars will look just like iCal, Contacts will look just like they do in Address Book, etc. This is similar to the way .Mac Webmail works today, though we've heard that the new interfaces will be much snazzier (yes, that's a technical term). Apple should also be updating the .Mac dependent applications (iChat, iWeb, iPhoto etc.) to work with the new service. The new service will be backwards compatible with .Mac protocols for the time being."
MobileMe is expected to be available in late June/ early July.
MobileMe is already built in to the latest beta of the iPhone OS.
MobileMe will feature over-the-air syncing of contacts, calendars, and photos.
A version of MobileMe for Windows is planned.
RIM jumped from 35.1 to 44.5 percent between the fourth and first quarters largely through further expansions of its BlackBerry range into the high-end home user market, which is still relatively new to the originally business-oriented company. Palm in turn raised its share from 7.9 percent to 13.4 percent based largely on sales of the Centro, which is considered one of the least expensive new smartphones on sale in the US and is targeted at first-time as well as price-conscious users trading up from comparatively limited devices." StyleTap has officially announced that they will be bringing their Palm OS Emulator to the iPhone and iPod touch.
"The iPhone is one of the hottest new mobile devices out there," said Gregory Sokoloff, CEO of StyleTap Inc., "And the response to our video has convinced us that many, many consumers, and companies, will eagerly jump at the change to buy iPhone devices if they can continue to run their must-have applications."
According to the company technically, StyleTap CrossPlatform is an excellent fit with the iPhone, as the powerful processor and large screen allows applications written for Palm OS devices to run at full speed and at full screen resolution. The iPhone touch screen technology works in a very natural way with mobile applications originally designed for touch screen devices." Via PalmInfocenter .

"Dubbed 'HWPen,' the third-party handwriting recognition application was developed by Hanwang.com.cn to allow Chinese character input on the iPhone, but the program works equally well with English input. Apple has reportedly stripped English character input from the tool, sieving for only Chinese character recognition for iPhone OS 2.0," iPhone Atlas reports." Via MacDailyNews .

"There's not been a product announcement. There hasn't been any pricing decisions made. That's yet to come," CFO Rick Lindner told the Reuters Global Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit in New York.
AT&T, the exclusive U.S. carrier of the iPhone, has said it expects a next-generation iPhone that runs on faster, 3G networks, in the coming months.
Lindner said AT&T, the No. 1 U.S. telecommunications company, has more than 2.5 million iPhone customers, with the average subscriber spending nearly $100 a month on services after shelling out as much as $500 for the phone itself.
"With iPhones currently out of stock at many Apple stores, including its flagship outlets in New York City, rumors abound that the company is winnowing stocks in preparation for a new 3G version of the phone," ImportGenius.com reports.
"Last month Citi analysts Richard Gardner and Yeechang Lee predicted that Apple would announce the new 3G iPhone at its June 9th World Developers Conference in San Francisco. Meanwhile, Dvice.com reports that AT&T has told its employees that they cannot take vacation time from June 15 to July 12 to enable full staffing for an 'exciting Summer Promotional Launch,'" ImportGenius.com reports.
"Now data from U.S. customs records now seem to confirm this prediction, according to ImportGenius.com. By analyzing thousands of U.S. customs records for Apple Computer, employees of the search engine for container shipment data identified a major spike in imports generated by a new product type," ImportGenius.com reports.
"On March 19 Quanta delivered 20 ocean containers of merchandise, described on the Bills of Lading as 'electric computers,' to Apple, Inc. Neither Apple, Quanta, nor any other company has ever used this product description for any shipments to the U.S... The initial shipments were followed on March 27, April 28, May 6 and May 17 with an additional 44 containers—each containing an estimated 40,000 units of the new phone," ImportGenius.com reports.

"When Apple ships its iPhone 2.0 update–and the accompanying App Store for distributing third-party software for the phone–you won’t have to wait too long for native iPhone apps built by Google programmers.
"We expect to have applications at Day One," said Vic Gundotra, Google’s vice president of engineering."
Here's your daily dose of iPhone hysteria. AppleInsider has gotten hold of an AT&T memo stating that effective today, AT&T will be limiting sales of the iPhone to 1 per person (previously 3) and credit card is required. Apple currently lists the iPhone as unavailable, and it looks like AT&T is clearing its shelves. Wonder if this has something to do with the mythical 3G iPhone? ;)
The five-day WWDC event, which runs from June 9 to June 13, will feature the first ever iPhone track for mobile developers with in-depth sessions and hands-on labs to fully explore the capabilities of the OS X iPhone 2.0 software, including the iPhone SDK and the App Store, a breakthrough way for developers to wirelessly deliver their applications to iPhone and iPod® touch users.
It looks like the "iPhone Black" listed on AT&T's site might be, or might not be the official name for the 3G iPhone. Carphone Warehouse is currently listing accessories for the "iPhone Black". Stay tuned.

AppleInsider has gotten a screen shot from AT&T's website listing 2 iPhone models, "iPhone", and "iPhone Black". This might be a hint of things to come, or just an error on AT&T's site. Stay tuned.
MacRumors has posted the above screenshot found under Preferences in the 5th iPhone Beta. It looks like Apple will give you the choice of running the 3G iPhone at 3G speeds, but will also easily allow you to turn off 3G to save battery life.

"People familiar with the listing say the Waterloo, Canada-based smartphone designer is distributing the notice only within the company and is keeping most details hidden even to those aware of the posting.
"As part of a newly-created team, you’ll influence the development and design of BlackBerry software," the listing reads. "This is a very confidential brand new team and a senior position within RIM so I can't provide too many details. I guess you can figure out what it might be about though."
Among the requirements are a very strong emphasis on existing experience with Mac development, including programming in both Cocoa and Objective C as well as user interface design.
Web experience with Javascript, XML, and other functions is also essential. Experiences with developing for the Mac's Sync Services feature and interfacing with Bluetooth and USB devices are both considered assets, according to the company." Via AppleInsider .

The Commercial Times also cited sources at component suppliers as saying they have been instructed by Apple to begin preparing material supplies by the end of May.
Shipments of the 3G iPhone are expected to top three million units in June with the model likely to ship a total of 24-25 million units throughout its life-cycle, the paper added.
Reports of a 3G version iPhone are all unconfirmed at present, although industry watchers are fairly confident an announcement will be made at or around Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference 2008 (WWDC 2008) in June based
