"Motorola Inc.'s new cellphone chief is moving quickly to scale back the struggling division, simplifying the way it makes devices and cutting additional jobs.
Sanjay Jha, who also became Motorola's co-chief executive in August, has decided to focus on Google Inc.'s Android operating system as the software platform for Motorola's showcase phones, according to people familiar with the matter.
Mr. Jha is expected to detail his plans -- which will likely include thousands of layoffs -- as early as Thursday when the company reports earnings, these people said." Via The Wall Street Journal .
The move, which comes amid an intensifying proxy battle against activist investor Carl Icahn, would take the form of a tax-free distribution to Motorola's shareholders and is expected to be completed in 2009, the company said.
Motorola has been losing handset market share and is now ranked third in the world. The two entities it plans to split into are Mobile Devices, and Broadband & Mobility Solutions. The latter consists of its network equipment, enterprise and public safety businesses.
It said the creation of two companies would improve flexibility, increase management focus and provide more targeted investment opportunities for shareholders." Via Reuters .

"If you look at the company's performance the last year and beyond, it's no surprise at all," said Ellen Daley, a Forrester Research analyst. "And when the numbers came out that Samsung surpassed Motorola as the No. 2 device maker, it didn't bode well for Ed."
After just shy of three years at the wheel, Zander plans to resign his CEO position at the end of the year. He will be succeeded by Greg Brown, the current president and chief operating officer of the company.
Zander's downfall can be summed up in seven words: lack of innovation and slow to market, analysts and industry watchers say."

Motorola accounted for 13 percent of the phones sold to end users in the third quarter, down from 21 percent in the same quarter last year, Gartner said. At the same time, Samsung increased its share to 15 percent, while Nokia extended its lead at the top of the pack, accounting for 38 percent of the market, or more than one in every three mobile phones sold.
The figures will be a blow to Motorola, which lost share amid a strengthening market overall. Total sales to end users last quarter reached 289 million phones, up 15 percent from a year earlier. But Motorola had performed poorly all year, so the results were no great surprise, according to Carolina Milanesi, Gartner's research director for mobile devices.
"Motorola's been struggling since the end of 2006, so it's not just this quarter," she said.
Its problems have been two-fold, according to Milanesi. Motorola hasn't developed a phone to ignite the imagination in the way its popular Razr did a few years ago, she said, leaving it with a weak line-up. "The Razr2 has done okay, but it's not had the same impact that the first Razr did," she said."

The Boy Genius has gotten his hands on the upcoming Motorola Zante/SideKick Slide.
Gizmodo has posted pictures of an upcoming SideKick that is being designed in part with Motorola.
"The Zante, or Motorola Q900, will probably come out in October complete with full multimedia playback support, Java, game controllers and the obligatory Danger OS. Even while it is as gleaming and shares the same EDGE connectivity (this time by T-Mobile), it doesn't seem to compete with the JesusPhone, including only 128MB of internal Flash RAM. Its only expansion slot just can handle MiniSD cards up to 2GB. According to our tipster, Motorola and T-Mobile are aiming at 5.9 hours of talk time and a $269 average selling price tag, which sounds great for a cellphone with all these features."
Check out Gizmodo for more pics and information.
The Boy Genius is at it again with a hands on of an un-released device. This time he has the Motorola Q9M, and it has Verizon branding as you can see from the picture.
"The Q9M uses a regular miniUSB port instead of Motorola's new favorite microUSB, which makes charging and connecting a lot easier. The Q9M also looks like it supports miniSD cards for memory expansion, and has a nice red glow around the d-pad. This Q9M brings back the scroll wheel that the GSM Q9 lacked. Another Verizon customization was the home screen. It displays shortcuts for commonly used applications like the camera, messaging, web, music in a circular pattern on the screen. The icons in Windows Mobile are completely customized, and look for VCast music support on here as well. The QWERTY keyboard is fantastic just like the other Q9 we previewed, and the device actually has a metallic plastic on the front, and a black rubberized back. It feels good in your hands, and doesn't seem like you would drop it easily. It's a tad bit thicker than the GSM Q9 but that is understandable seeing as how miniSD cards are supported, but the camera appears to be only 1.3 megapixels."

The Boy Genius has gotten his hands on the yet to be released Motorola SCPL and posted a picture gallery.
"The SCPL (if this is indeed that model), has a 2 megapixel camera, supports video recording at a 320×240 resolution and it's thinner than the RAZR 2. Want some more specs? No problem! Look for an extremely high resolution 240×320 display, quite possibly 16M colors, and quad-band GSM/EDGE compatibility. The SCLP runs the JUIX operating system, uses a microUSB port, has a KRZR type look to it, and is a lot slimmer than the Motorola L7. There also is not a visible memory card slot, but in the housing there was a spot below the battery where a memory card slot might be incorporated later. Since this is the first public showing of this phone, we're guessing that it will be a little while before the announcement release!"

Engadget is reporting live from Motorola's Mobile Experience event today. Motorola has officially announced the successor to the RAZR. It is called the RAZR 2, very clever name. Just look at how thin this phone is compared to RAZR's of the past.
"Motorola has today officially unveiled the successor to one of the most iconic mobiles ever made, the RAZR 2. Available in 3.6Mbps HSDPA, EV-DO, and GSM / EDGE variants, the device comes in 2 millimeters slimmer than its predecessor and -- on some versions, anyway -- will be the second to use Motorola's new Linux-based platform (the first being the Z6). It includes something Moto is calling "Crystal Talk" technology that automatically adjusts volume and tone based on ambient noise. Other features include external music controls, haptics for tactile feedback when keys are pressed, a full HTML browser, 2 megapixel cam, the full suite of Bluetooth profiles, Windows Media Player synchronization, a 2-inch external display, and twice the screen resolution of the original RAZR. GSM versions start shipping in early July, with CDMA following up later in the summer."

Gizmodo is reporting that T-Mobile has launched the Motorola MOTORIZR.
"The pricing is going to be $99 with a two-year contract ($249.99 if you buy it outright), and the phone comes with myFaves, a 2.0-megapixel camera, 8x digital zoom, flash, stereo Bluetooth, microSD slot, quad-band GSM, voice dialing, and a 1.9-inch screen."
Every day must be like Christmas for The Boy Genius , he's always unboxing a cool new gadget. His latest unboxing is of the new Gold Motorola V3xx.
"Here goes some more ritual Unboxing goodness in the form of the Cingular Gold V3xx. The unit is exactly the same as the Grey V3xx and is a little larger and heavier than the standard RAZR. The battery is a slightly extended and has a little more weight to it, due to compensate for the added 3G support. If your in the market for a RAZR-like phone, one that does 3G, and out flashes a light bulb this could be your phone."
"Motorola's StarTAC was pretty revolutionary when it first came out, one of the first phone models to comfortably fit in one's pocket and look good doing it. Even by today's standards the 10 year-old-phone is still pretty damned small, and Moto has decided to revive the long-neglected brand with the new StarTAC III."
