The Boy Genius has posted the 1st Palm Pre review. It's a good read, there's some things he likes and some he dislikes, but all in all it's a positive review for the Pre.
Conclusion:
"Everyone’s expectation are set enormously high for this device and it really feels like the original iPhone launch again. Well, maybe not quite as insane but still. Palm has done a masterful job of crafting and molding the hype factor, but there seems to be an underlying issue. In being so secretive, they’ve let people’s imaginations run wild and expectations couldn’t possibly be higher.
The OS is great. There’s no ifs ands or buts; it’s really refreshing to see something that’s brand new with a UI unlike anything else out there. The only problem with this is, Palm’s never been a hardware company that anyone’s really cared about. They have been the furthest thing from innovative since circa-2003 — their hardware has always been second rate at best and it doesn’t seem to be changing now. Couple that with the nation’s underdog carrier at a $299 price-point (before rebate), and we’re not sure how many people are going to be lined up overnight, yet we’re pretty confident once people are able to play a real unit themselves, there will be more than a lot of happy Palm Pre customers.
Once the initial Pre launch is over and done with and all the hype, smoke and mirrors are clear though, we can see Palm being pretty successful moving forward. Hell, Palm has converted tons of people into raging Pre fanboys before they could even see the phone in person! Very Apple-esque"

"A whole new rabbit hole to jump down. One of our better sources indicated to us that Palm is “very far along” on a second Pre-like device and currently has plans to put it on the market in the late part of 2009, possibly as early as the Fall.
The details are still slim - it’s a smaller device (and hopefully that means slimmer), but it will run Palm’s new WebOS operating system that everyone is raving about. We’re trying to determine if the device has a physical keyboard - no word on that yet."

Tam over at TamsPPC has posted the supposed product specifications for the unannounced Treo 850 smartphone. Tam claims to have received the specs for the upcoming Treo from a source at Palm.
In the article posted on TamsPPC, the source writes:

The Codename for this unit was 'Skywriter' "

Treo 850 comparison pic with the BlackBerry 8800. (Palm has finally realized thin is in) :)
All-in-all, this looks like it is going to be a solid device that will make many of Palm's customers happily fork over the cash to upgrade from older Treo products.
***Editor's note*** The Treo 850 is shaping up to be a VERY impressive device, just look at how thin and powerful it is . Palm is finally going head to head in features and design against the HTC's, and BlackBerry's of the smartphone market, and all I can say is it's about time!!

The Boy Genius has gotten the scoop on the Treo 850. Funny thing is Palm hasn't even announced the Treo 800 yet, so to get a look at the Treo 850 is a huge "leak". The Treo 850 is running Windows Mobile 6 Professional (touchscreen) (notice the Windows icon near Internet Explorer, that's not Windows Mobile Smartphone), 400 MHz processor, include 100MB of RAM, it also looks like the Treo 850 is a GSM Treo (3G icon, same as the 3G icon on the Treo 750). The Treo 850 is also using the same keyboard found on the Centro.

It was only a matter of time before the above picture would be "leaked" on the internet. This is the 1st image of the Treo 800w, and PalmInfocenter has gotten the scoop.
The Treo 800w is the Treo that Windows Mobile Treo lovers have been asking for for years, and it looks like Palm has finally delivered.
The Treo 800w is expected to be a Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional based Treo, feature the 1st 320 x 320 screen on any Windows Mobile device, 400MHz CPU, 128MB of RAM, 256MB of ROM, EvDo Rev. A, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, 2.0 megapixel camera, and a micor USB connector. This is shaping up to be a very impressive device.
The Treo 800w is expected to launch on Sprint sometime this summer.
Labels: palm. treo, windows mobile

WMExperts is reporting that a leaked Sprint roadmap shows the Treo 800w launching in July and replacing the Treo 700wx. This certainly coincides with Palm's CEO Ed Colligan's statement that Palm would be releasing updated Treos before the end of the summer.
The Sprint roadmap lists some of the specs of the device:
EVDO Rev. A
Windows Mobile 6
WiFi
Autonomous GPS
Camera and Non-camera versions

The Boy Genius has gotten the scoop of upcoming Vodafone smartphones. There's an upcoming Treo codenamed "Palm Drucker" which is expected to be released in July. It has some pretty impressive specs, finally built-in WiFi, GPS, a 320 x 320 screen, and runs Windows Mobile 6.1
I would not be surprised if the "Palm Drucker" (gotta love those codenames) turns out to be the GSM version of the upcoming Treo 800w expected to be released in the US for Sprint and Verizon. Palm needs to have a successor to the Treo 700w/wx CDMA Treos here in the US ASAP. I would expect to see a CDMA version of the Drucker (Treo 800w) to debut in the US before July of 2008 . Stay tuned.

So I've had the new Verizon Treo 755p for a few days and things have been going well. I've moved all of my applications, games, and data over to the 755p and I'm using it as my everyday production device.
But there is one thing that is driving me absolutely crazy: The nonstop LED blinking while the cell radio is turned on.
That is where Treoware's LEDOff comes in. With LEDOff, you can control what alarms and events trigger the LED to pulse. I just turned off Signal blinking for In coverage and now the Treo 755p on Verizon works just like my Treo 700p on Sprint.
LEDOff is "donationware" and can be downloaded from the Treoware website.

Earlier this week Palm and Verizon launched the Treo 755p on the Verizon Wireless EVDO network and today I received Gadgets On The Go's review unit. Like a kid on, well, Christmas Morning, I tore into the shipping carton to unbox the new Treo.
Let me start off by saying that new azure green is much better in person than it looks on the computer screen. Sitting on my desk, the new Treo looks like a dark grey or black. Early next year when the company I work for starts deploying them, I will have no hesitation deploying them to the executive team.
Today is the first time I've had a chance to play with the 755p. I really like the the new Treo 755p soft touch paint. The 755p's new contours along the side along with the soft touch paint make the Treo fit comfortably in your hand. When holding the Treo 700p and 755p, one in each hand, the difference is like night and day.
I plan on using the Treo 755p as my primary device for the next few weeks and concluding my test drive with a review here on Gadgets on the Go.
For more information about the Treo 755p, check out Palm's website.

Free Update Adds Improved Calendar Functionality, Enhanced Email Support and HSDPA Capabilities for AT&T Customers
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Palm, Inc. today announced an update to Windows Mobile 6 for Palm Treo 750 smartphone customers in the United States. Windows Mobile 6 brings increased functionality, enhanced user interface and strengthened security and performance to the Treo 750 smartphone, which is offered exclusively in the United States by AT&T. The update is available today as a free download for existing Treo 750 smartphone customers.
The Treo 750 currently is available in the United States on AT&T's 3G BroadbandConnect network, which is available in more than 200 major metropolitan areas and provides average download speeds between 600Kbps (kilobits per second) and 1,400Kbps. For those customers, the update will facilitate High-speed Download Packet Access (HSDPA) capability, allowing faster data-download speeds on 3G/UMTS/HSDPA networks and access to AT&T Multimedia services: AT&T Music, CV (Video), and AT&T Mall.
"The enhanced security and productivity tools available in Windows Mobile 6 will allow people to be more productive with their Treo smartphones," said Tim McDonough, senior director of product management at Microsoft Corp. "The Windows Mobile 6 support of storage card data encryption, combined with the ability for IT departments to wipe data remotely if a device is lost, gives businesses the confidence to use Treos to accomplish critical business tasks."
Windows Mobile 6 combined with Exchange Server 2007 support is available out of the box and delivers a wide range of enhanced features, including the following
Microsoft Direct Push Technology connection to email, calendar, contacts and tasks;
Email enhancements such as HTML-formatted email messages; Ability to set an out-of-office message from the Treo smartphone;
Mini-SD storage card encryption, password and PIN improvements, and remote data wipe;
Ability to search for email messages on the Exchange server; Meeting request and scheduling conflict improvements; and
Improved Calendar with Day-at-a-Glance bar.

Ya gotta love the Palm OS developer community. I came across Treobble over @ PalmInfocenter . Treobble is a FREE contacts/dialer program that brings the iPhone's scrolling address book to your Treo or Centro. You can now flick through your Treo or Centro's contacts. I've tried it on my Treo 755p and a Centro review unit, it works well if flicking is your thing.

Rumor Mill EditionI was just looking at the Seidio online store and noticed that green was an option for the back plate cover for their 3200mAh battery. Could this mean that the Verizon branded Treo 755p will be green? Sprint has burgundy and blue. Altel has black. Since the the Treo 755p is a CDMA only device the only other major CDMA carriers in North America are Verizon and Telus Mobility (Canada). It is just something to think about. There has been no official word as to when the Treo 755p will make an appearance on the Verizon network, though many believe it will be sometime this month to help drive holiday sales.

GearDiary has posted a picture of what appears to be a Centro with AT&T branding. They're calling it a Treo 500p and since Sprint has the Centro exclusively, maybe AT&T will be getting the same device under the Treo name?
***Update***
Palm has asked GearDiary to remove the picture. Notice the "My Centro" icon in the launcher? Looks like Sprint won't be the only carrier with a Centro;)

PalmInfocenter is reporting that the Treo 500 has just received FCC approval which makes it almost a given that Palm will be releasing the Treo 500 here in the US very soon. It's also very likely that AT&T will be the carrier of choice for the Treo 500 since they are the only GSM US carrier that carries Windows Mobile Treos, and the only US carrier that supports HSDPA (AT&T's broadband network). It looks like Palm is really going after the low end Smartphone market with the Treo 500 and the soon to be released Treo Centro.

"Palm is expected to launch its first Linux-based smartphone in October, with the company likely to introduce more Linux models in the future, according to sources close to the company.
Palm's new smartphone will be based on the Linux platform developed for consumer devices by Wind River Systems – a continuation of cooperation between the two companies following Palm's launch of its "mobile companion," the Foleo, in the second quarter of this year, said the sources.
The Palm Foleo, an on-the-go device which can perform functions similar to a UMPC (ultra-mobile PC), is also based on the Linux platform from Wind River.
Palm's new Linux-based smartphone will help facilitate Linux applications between the smartphone and the Foleo, the sources noted.
Palm will also continue to cooperate with Microsoft to develop Windows Mobile-based devices, leaving the Palm OS (operating system) as a non-mainstream technology, the sources indicated."
Could this be the "but there is a bigger story coming, and will be revealed closer to the launch" statement that Palm revealed last week when it announced the Palm Centro? Stay tuned.

Palm gives these reasons for the removal:
"We have taken down the Verizon Wireless Treo 700p and 700w/wx updaters as a result of increasing customer reports of network connectivity issues following the updates. We are currently investigating the issue and will re-post as soon as they become available.
The reported error displays "Error 3000 - Data network is not available" when attempting to connect to the data network. This error does not affect your device or personal data in any other way. Thank you for your patience."

Palm hasn't been having too much success these days with releasing ROM updates. A day after the Sprint Treo 700p MR update Palm removed it from their site because it was causing problems after 700p users updated their Treo 700p. "Over a year after the phone's launch, the long-awaited ROM Maintenance Release for the Verizon version of the Treo 700p is finally being rolled out to certain Verizon Wireless corporate stores. In an odd twist deviating from Palm's usual support practices, Verizon has sent the 700p 1.10 ROM out on SD cards to select corporate stores for Verizon service technician use only. At this point in time, no user-installable version of this update is available nor has a download been leaked."
I wonder what the hold up is for the general availability release of the Verizon 700p MR on the Palm website. I haven't had any trouble applying the 700p MR using the SD card on my Sprint Treo. Hopefully my fellow Verizon Treo 700p customers will be able got get the many bug fixes included in this update.

"SlingPlayer Mobile for Palm OS is now out of beta and version 1.0 has been officially released. Combined with the SlingBox , this solution enables users to view their own live television and entertainment media on the go via the Treo 700p or 755p smartphone. Sling Media says that other Palm OS devices may work as well, and encourages users to try out the trial version.
SlingPlayer Mobile is available now for $29.99 US and $34.99 CAD.
There is also a 30day trial of SlingPlayer Mobile." Via PDALive .

Well it looks like Palm will be releasing Windows Mobile 6 as an upgrade to Treo 750 owners soon. PalmInsider is showing off their Treo 750 running Windows Mobile 6. They're reporting that HSDPA is now included with the upgrade.
"We have been reading rumours about the HSDPA coming to the Treo 750 in future firmware updates but today, to my surprise I was surfing the web on the Treo when I have seen on top that the connection icon changed from 3G (no more 'U's here) to H and the browsing was hyper speed. No tests made so far but it seems that finally the HSDPA is included in Windows Mobile 6."

"The SD card updater has been reposted to the Palm site - installation details can be found here. We are working to resolve the installation issue with the desktop updater and will make it available as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Verizon Wireless users, we will make the 700p MR available as soon as we can."

I completely agree with this review. The Treo 755p is definitely a step up in my opinion from the Treo 700p, it's the reason I upgraded. The Treo 755p is the most stable Palm OS Treo I've ever used. Hopefully Palm will re-release the Treo 700p MR update to help out all of the existing Treo 700p users.

* Naming convention will be Treo 5XX
* One version with Windows Mobile 6 Standard, the other is a new non-touchscreen edition of the Palm OS
* Multiple colors
* 135 grams; 117 x 65 x 13.8 mm
* 2.4 inch QVGA screen with 65k colors
* 2 megapixel camera
* Bluetooth 2.0 w/ A2DP support
* 3G + HSDPA
* 256 MB onboard memory with 64 MB of RAM
If true, this will be Palm's first non-touchscreen Treo. The lack of touch screen will make these Treos thin, something people have been asking of Palm for a while. Of course to make a Treo as thin as a Dash, BlackJack and Q will mean no touchscreen. While there have been many non-touch screen Windows Mobile based devices, this will be the first touchscreen-less Palm OS based device. People shouldn't be too concerned with the lack of touchscreen, Palm has engineered the Palm OS Treos to be completely usable without ever really needing to use the stylus or touch the screen. I have been wanting Palm to do this for a while, lets see how this turns out. Stay tuned.

"1. The Palm Ganfolf is real, though they called it the "Gandolfini". They confirmed the $200 pricepoint, saying it was aimed at teenagers who text messaged frequently (nothing was said about watching loads of Sopranos). They described the design as "a 700p that got in a nasty accident with a steamroller".
2. The Blackberry Pearl 2 is on it's way. RIM and Sprint are working on it. "Looks to have Rev. A EVDO and will support the Sprint Music Store." They haven't seen any pictures at the moment.
Both phones are looking like late summer or early fall releases."

Someone leaked a blurry picture of what is supposed to be an upcoming Treo. As you can see from the picture it has Vodafone branding, looks like it's running Windows Mobile Standard (no-touch screen). If this picture is legit it would be Palm's first major new Treo design, and also Palm's first non-touch screen Treo.
Morning Paper also released a picture of the Gandolf running Palm OS Garnet.
"This device will be available sometime in the 4th quarter and will be targeted to the youth market. The hope is that a sub $200 device will attract that younger crowd.
As stated earlier the key features will be a qwerty keypad, Palm OS, Bluetooth, Camera, Micro SD Memory Card and best of all, it will have high speed Rev A data capability."
I didn't believe the pictures to be legit at first, but the fact that there are now 2 photos of the same device running both Palm OS and Windows Mobile makes me believe this might be real. Stay tuned.

"This is an installation issue and it is evident immediately during the installation of the MR to your device. If you have already loaded the MR successfuly to your device, you are good to go."
I do know people that have succesffuly installed the MR update are very happy with the improvements. I hope Palm sorts out whatever issue the Sprint 700p MR update is having on certain Treo 700ps and re-posts a fix ASAP.

I wanted to share my upgrade experiences to help fellow Sprint Treo 700p customers apply the MR.
The Treo 700p MR is a ROM upgrade, which means that the software being loaded on your Treo can't be unloaded when the device is hard reset. Anyone who is using a Treo 700p on the Sprint network should apply this update.
Downloading and Installing
You can download the 700p MR update here. Before attempting to install this update, read the directions! Since this is a ROM upgrade, the contents of the Treo (your data and third-party installed applications) will be erased. Palm recommends that you HotSync your Treo before attempting to start the upgrade. This will ensure that you will be able to restore you settings, data, and applications. (See Minor Issues below.)
The Treo 700p MR installer, like the recently released Treo 680 AT&T MR installer, can be transferred to the Treo either by a HotSync or by copying the files to a Secure Digital (SD) card. Having previously performed ROM upgrades on older Palm devices using the HotSync method, I chose to try the SD card upgrade option since this technique is new. Refer to Palm's website for directions on installing the 700p MR update.
Windows Vista and Mac OS X users will need a blank SD card to install the update. IT customers who need to patch up fleets of devices can also use the SD card upgrade method. Windows 2000 and XP customers can chose to install the update installer via HotSync or the SD card. (I had a 128MB card hanging around so I used that since I need to update a customer who uses a Mac tomorrow.)
To kick off the installer either insert the SD card or, if you plan on using the HotSync method, simply double-click the "SprintTreo700pDesktopUpdate.exe" application and follow the on-screen prompts on your PC.
The update takes a good 20 - 30 minutes to complete the install. You should only perform the update when you have the full amount of time to devote to the upgrade. You will also need to keep the Treo connected to the power adapter during the entire install.
Minor Issues
For the most part, my upgrade to ROM version 1.10 when smoothly. There where only a few minor issues during and post upgrade.
When reading the upgrade directions on the Palm website, Step 6 of the SD card install directions makes reference to the Treo 680 update. Clearly this is a typo as Palm is trying to re-use the documentation from the Treo 680 MR update. Other folks have reporting seeing a reference to "Lowrider" on at least one upgrade screen. (I didn't see this screen myself, but I was watching my Jr. Podcasters so I could have easily missed it.) In either case, you can safely ignore these textual only errors. They do not appear to cause any trouble with the actually installation of the upgrade.
The next error I encountered was LudusP getting stuck in an error code loop. After restoring my data and applications by performing a HotSync operation once the Treo 700p MR had been successfully applied I started getting a "Error 43: Database not found" error on restart of the Treo. I warm reset my Treo, deleted LudusP, soft reset, performed a HotSync operation, and then reinstalled LudusP. (Make sure that you have your registration code handy.)
Email account passwords that had been previously stored in VersaMail were no longer there. I re-entered the password for the two accounts that I access from my Treo and was then able to check email again. I also needed to re-pair my trusted Bluetooth devices again.
The Enhancements
Since I'm writing this article after having just applied the 700p MR, I haven't done much testing yet. That will happen throughout the week. I would like to share a few observations. Blazer (the application titled "Web" on the Treo) is now launching in about 3-4 seconds. This is a huge improvement over how things were just working the other day.
I also noticed that using the Dial By Name feature is working faster than it had been previously.
Palm has also officially added support for 4GB Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) cards. This is welcomed upgrade for any customers who would like to load large documents, gobs of music, and video on their Treo.
In Conclusion
Over the coming days, I plan on performing some additional testing of the Treo 700p MR. I'm looking forward to seeing a new level of compatibility with my ThinkOutside Stowaway Sierra Bluetooth keyboard, which unfortunately, hasn't worked well with my Treo up to this point.
The Treo 700p MR update for Sprint customers looks like it will be solid update. Verizon customers will be in for an extended wait as Palm and Verizon are undoubtedly working to get a patch out to their customers.

"The Treo 700p maintenance release (MR) is expected to be available on Monday (June 4th) for Sprint users via the palm.com website. We will post an update here on the blog with a link to the MR once it is live. We don't have a specific date for when the 700p MR will be available for Verizon Wireless users at this time.

"We appreciate the frustration that has been shared and everyone's patience. I know we said we are working to deliver the 700p maintenance release (MR) the week of May 28th. We are still hoping to make the MR available for Sprint Treo 700p users tomorrow or early next week.
Unfortunately, the MR will not be available this week for Treo 700p Verizon Wireless users, but we expect it will be available soon. Will post again tomorrow."
Stay tuned..

I have been using the BoxWave ElectraSpan Extended Battery in my Palm Treo 700p for the last few weeks and I have to say that this battery’s performance is remarkable.
I have been testing the ElectraSpan battery in two different ways with my Treo: “average” use and “extended” use. While those terms are a bit subjective, I like to test things like batteries with real world usage.
My normal usage of the Treo typically involves using the Treo’s PIM features (Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, and Memos) as well as periodic personal email, news, and weather updates through out my day. I may also play a few games of Bejeweled, look up some information on the Internet, work with some Word documents and make a few short phone calls. Under these conditions, the ElectraSpan battery allowed me to use my Treo for four consecutive days before I thought about recharging. At the end of the fourth day, there was still about 23% battery life remaining.
There where a few times during my test period that I would say I used my Treo for an extended period of time. These are times when I was on the road and my Treo acted as my connection back to the office. In addition to all of the things that I would typically do, I enabled the wireless email client for my corporate email server. This adds an extra load to the battery because the corporate client sends push email updates down to the Treo every five minutes. I will also make more frequent phones calls back to the office to resolve issues and answer questions from my customers. This extra demand on my Treo means that it is being used all day long for at least eight hours. In these situations, I can get about 13 hours of use out of the ElectraSpan battery. If I’m out doing a product rollout, I’ll be sure to top off the battery over night so I’ll have a fresh charge in the morning.
Buying Advice
The BoxWave ElectraSpan Extended Battery should be on the short list for anyone who is a Treo power user and is considering an extended life battery. The 2400mAh battery is the same size as Palm’s stock 1800mAh battery, which means that you get extra battery life without having to increase the size of the Treo.
The ElectraSpan battery is compatible with the Treo 650, 700p, 700w, and 700wx. If you are using a different Treo, BoxWave has extended life batteries for those devices also. The EletraSpan retails for $85.95, however, if you purchase it directly from BoxWave’s online store you can get the battery for $38.95 (55% off). Shipping is available to North America and international locations.

While reviewing the Palm Treo 755p material just posted to the Palm website, I noticed a small logo in the top right corner of the page titled "mypalm beta". Naturally I clicked the link.MyPalm beta appears to be a new customer care offering from Palm. The following is taken directly from the MyPalm beta site:
"Introducing our new MyPalm program, designed to help you get even more from your Treo smartphone. Whether you're looking for a little help getting your email up and running, the hottest new software application, or a little extra savings on that accessory you've been coveting, you'll find it here. Heck, we'll even remind you when there's a new update for your Treo."
Right now, membership to the beta is free. I'm looking forward to exploring this new service later today.
