SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Palm Inc. shares fell Tuesday as analysts raised concerns that the smart phones the company recently released through Verizon Wireless are not selling well.
The stock slid 66 cents, or 7.2 percent, to $8.45 in afternoon trading. In the past year, the stock has traded between $5.85 and $18.09.
In a client note Tuesday, Macquarie Research analyst Phil Cusick downgraded the stock to "Neutral" from "Outperform," citing "weak" sales checks at Verizon and increasing operating expenses resulting from higher-than-expected spending on promotions.
Verizon began selling upgraded versions of Palm's Pre and Pixi smart phones -- the Pre and Pixi Plus -- in late January. The original Pre and Pixi went on sale last year through Sprint Nextel Corp.
The phones use Palm's latest operating system, webOS. They are the company's latest attempt to regain share in the fast-growing smart phone market. Palm, which was a smart phone pioneer, has struggled for years as Apple Inc.'s iPhone and Research In Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry have grown increasingly popular among both consumer and business users.
Cusick wrote that sales at Verizon are improving, but "off a very low base," and that checks show Palm's sales at Sprint haven't improved since Verizon started selling the new phones.

But first: frankly, I can’t fathom why the Pre and the Pixi haven’t proved to be more popular. The polish and panache of both phones are phenomenal.
Both phones feature Palm’s Web OS software, a fine, fluid operating system that, in many aspects, out-iPhones the iPhone. Among other pluses, the software multitasks, so you can put on Pandora radio as you process your e-mail. These are multitouch phones, too, meaning that two-finger gestures (like pinching to shrink a photo or Web page) work perfectly." Read the full review here .

The good:
The Palm Pixi Plus brings the addition of Wi-Fi and the ability to use the smartphone as a mobile hotspot. The sleek handset also offers Bluetooth, 3G, and GPS. The multitasking features of Palm WebOS continues to be one of the highlights. The bad:
The smartphone can be sluggish. The camera lacks editing options, and picture quality is pretty poor. No expansion slot. The bottom line:
While not a major overhaul, the Palm Pixi Plus adds built-in Wi-Fi and gives customers making the jump from a feature phone to a smartphone even more functionality without breaking the bank.Labels: palm, palm webos, pixi plus, review, verizon
The good: The Palm Pre Plus offers double the storage capacity and double the RAM. The smartphone also ships with an inductive back cover and features an improved QWERTY keyboard.

"The Palm Pre Plus upgrades the Palm Pre in almost all the right places and has a bright future with new features coming via software updates. It's a cliché to say this, but: the Palm Pre Plus is the best phone Palm has ever made. That's exactly how it should be and it's gratifying that we can expect this kind of quality from Palm now. Let's just hope that it's enough to keep them in the smartphone game for years to come."

Well, look what just got the green light from the FCC to play on Verizon's network. Besides getting the Pre very soon, Verizon will also be getting a new Pixi. The P121EW is the model number used by the Pixi. The best piece of news here is that the Palm Pixi will be getting WiFi (Sprint Pixi lacks WiFi), something it shouldn't have left the warehouse without. Verizon customers will soon have 2 awesome phones from Palm to choose from, and with Verizon's Pixi packing WiFi, that decision is going to be a little harder to make.
The analyst is also saying a Verizon iPhone is expected in 2010 as well.
"Verizon (VZ) is rolling out a device that finally gives it a more credible alternative. This new $200 phone is the Motorola Droid and it’s the first Verizon model to run Google’s (GOOG) Android smart-phone operating system. I’ve been testing the Droid, and while it has some significant drawbacks, I regard it as a success overall. It’s the best super-smart phone Verizon offers, the best Motorola (MOT) phone I’ve tested and the best hardware so far to run Android. I can recommend the Droid to Verizon loyalists who have lusted for a better smart phone, but don’t want to switch networks."

Lowell C. McAdam, the chief executive of Verizon Wireless, has been carrying the revamped device for a few weeks, looking for any evidence that this time it will catch on. A reliable source emailed me today when the Verizon/Pre story broke and told me that Verizon "might" pass on the Pre, not because they don't want it, but there's a "great" possibility that Verizon would be the exclusive carrier of an unannounced Palm webOS device in the near future. Palm has made it clear that there are more Palm webOS devices in the pipeline, so if Verizon did pass on the Pre it could be because they will get the exclusivity on a new Palm webOS device. This source is very reliable. Stay tuned.

"They need to check their facts," Hesse said in an interview at a press event here to launch the Palm Pre. "That just is not the case. Both Palm and Sprint have agreed not to discuss the length of the exclusivity deal. But I can tell you it's not six months."
Last week, Lowell McAdam, CEO of Verizon Wireless was quoted by Reuters as saying that over the next six months consumers could expect to see devices "like the Palm Pre and a second-generation Storm" on its network.
AT&T's CEO Randall Stephenson also said last week that he hoped to have the Palm Pre on the AT&T network when the exclusivity deal with Sprint ended.
Palm is depending heavily on Pre to galvanize its business and regain market share from rivals such as Apple Inc (AAPL.O). Pre is also seen as key to helping stem customer losses at Verizon's smaller rival Sprint Nextel Corp (S.N), which is launching the Pre exclusively on June 6. Verizon, the No. 1 U.S. mobile service, will offer Pre in "six months or so," company Chief Executive Lowell McAdam said during a conference webcast."
PhoneNews is reporting that AT&T's CEO Randall Stephenson spoke to the Wall Street Journal and confirmed that AT&T will carry the Palm Pre once Sprint's 6 month exclusivity ends.
The fact that the #1 and #2 carrier are letting people know that they will carry the Pre says a lot. The Pre hasn't even been released, and already Verizon and AT&T have announced they will carry the Pre. This news shot Palm's stock up but Sprint's down.

In a sign of just how desperate phone companies are to lock customers in to lengthy contracts, Verizon’s (VZ) wireless partner is willing to subsidize the Storm – which sells for about $500 without a calling plan – in order to lure subscribers in England.
Though a final decision has yet to be made, Verizon is considering the same strategy for the Storm’s U.S. debut next month, according to an industry source familiar with the discussions. Another person close to the company says it’s unlikely the Storm will be free.

For the past month I have been road testing the new Treo 755p from Verizon Wireless for Gadgets On the Go. The following is my review of the newest Palm Treo smartphone to debut on the Verizon Wireless network.
Body Style
The single biggest improvement that the Treo 755p has to offer over the model it replaces, the Treo 700p, is its redesigned body. The 755p now has an internalized antenna bringing it in line with many of the other competing devices on the market today. For many customers, this will be a welcomed and long awaited change.
Palm has also worked to improve the way the Treo feels when you are holding it in your hand. To achieve these improvements, Palm used soft touch paint and changed the contours along the sides. Rather than a convex edge, the sides of the Treo 755p are concave. As a result, the Treo 755p is much easier to hold as you are rushing about your busy day. The Treo 755p is also slimmer and lighter than the 700p, though it is hard to notice the change even with the two devices sitting side-by-side.
Owners of previous Palm OS devices from the recent past will be happy to learn that the Treo 755p uses the same multi-connector data port as was used on the Treo 650, Treo 700p, and the Palm TX. Customers upgrading from those devices will be able to reuse many of their existing accessories. For example, I was able to use my Treo 650/700p HotSync Cradle kit, spare HotSync cables and chargers, hard and soft carry cases, and vehicle mount with the Treo 755p. Regrettably, some accessories won’t work on the Treo 755p. The Treo 755p includes a miniSD card slot. If you have used full high Secure Digital (SD) or Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) cards with earlier devices from Palm, they won’t work with the 755p. A change in card formats was necessary to accommodate the internalized antenna. The good news is that the miniSD card slot on the 755p does support the newer miniSDHC card formats.
Software Enhancements
The Treo 755p is noticeably more stable than the Treo 700p. During the entire month I was using the 755p, the device did not reset once on me. Google Maps is now bundled on the device and has been integrated with the Contacts application. To use the feature, look up an address in a Contacts records, and tap the Map button. You can now quickly obtain directions to locations that are in your contacts database. (If you plan on using this feature, or others that require a connection to the Internet, you will want to purchase a Verizon Wireless data plan in addition to the voice plan.)
For the most part, the software on the Treo 755p felt snappy and responsive. I was able to quickly jump between the preinstalled and third-party applications that I installed on the device. While over-all performance has been improved over the Treo 700p, the Blazer web browser still had a little bit of a lag starting up and closing down.
There are two changes in the factory default software package that I would liked to have seen Palm make. The first is the inclusion of VersaMail 4.0, rather than VeraMail 3.5.5 with the device. VersaMail is Palm’s email client. (Requires manual installation using the MyPalm application on the Treo.) VersaMail 3.5.5 is functional, however, it would have been nice if Palm had added VersaMail 4.0 to the 755p for it’s background synchronization feature. The Palm representative that I spoke with suggested that Palm was not planning on releasing an upgrade to VersaMail 4.0 for devices that did not ship with it. Disappointing. The second change that I would have made would have been to make the Voice Dial software the full version rather than a 14-day trial. Treo smartphones that are based on the Microsoft Windows Mobile operating system, like the Treo 750, come bundled with a voice dialing application and Palm OS Treo smartphone customers deserve no less. (If you wish to keep using the Voice Dial software after the initial 14-day trial, the cost is an additional $16 dollars.)
During my trial period, there where four applications that I either upgraded or installed to enhance my personal productivity. These items are subjective and will vary from user to user. I started off by installing Treoware’s LEDOff utility to over ride the constant blinking of the Verizon Treo’s LED since I prefer the LED to only blink when I need to be alerted to an event. I also installed Tyler Faux’s LudusP utility; which I used to remap the Menu button to the green send button. For me, it is a more natural movement to press the green send button to open a menu when my thumb is on the 5-way navigator than reaching down to the Menu button located in the lower right of the keyboard. Since I use my Treo for writing and note taking, I upgraded the bundled version of DataViz Documents To Go from version 9 Professional to version 10 Premium for Microsoft Office 2007 compatibility. And lastly, since I like to listen to music while I write, I upgraded Normsoft Pocket Tunes from version 3 to version 4.
In Conclusion
The Treo 755p is a solid device for both business and consumer oriented users alike. Unlike the Sprint edition, the Verizon Treo 755p is only available in an Azure Green. (It looks better in person than it does on the web.) Palm has made some positive changes in the areas of hardware and software. The refined body of the Treo 755p makes it easy to work with through out the day. The software improvements have added a welcome level of functionality and stability to the product.
To use the Treo 755p, you will need at least one free USB port on your computer and be running either Windows 2000 Professional SP4, Windows XP SP2, Windows Vista, or Mac OS X 10.2 or later. At this time, there is no support for 64-bit versions of Windows XP or Windows Vista, which is something I would like to see Palm address before the end of the year.
For more information, including details about how to by the Treo 755p, visit the Palm website.
The Verizon Treo 755p is available in Azure Green and pricing is shown above. The Treo 755p will sell for $579 with no contract.

Verizon earned a 69% score from users and won points for having a bit better coverage, less static and fewer dropped calls than fellow giants T-Mobile and AT&T.
Sprint came up worst, with a 59% score in New York.
The pricey iPhone, which works with AT&T service, was narrowly judged best phone by a panel of experts, edging out Treo and Blackjack models.
The results were part of a nationwide survey of more than 47,000 readers in 20 metro areas that appears in the magazine's upcoming issue.
Not surprisingly, cell phone users aren't very pleased with their service overall, with less than half saying they are completely or somewhat satisfied with their service.
The satisfaction rating is markedly less than similar figures for other services like cable and satellite TV or Internet service providers.

"Google Inc. is in advanced talks with two top U.S. cellphone operators, Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel Corp., about selling handsets tailored to its new mobile-phone operating system, people familiar with the matter said.
Deals with the carriers would represent a major breakthrough for the Internet search giant, which until now has encountered wariness from some quarters of the wireless industry about its mobile-phone plans. Google shares crossed $700 Wednesday on the Nasdaq Stock Market. The milestone is a fresh intraday high for the company, after it passed $600 for the first time only three weeks ago.

The company needs wireless operators to sign on to the project in order to get its mobile devices in front of consumers by the middle of next year. Palm gives these reasons for the removal:
"We have taken down the Verizon Wireless Treo 700p and 700w/wx updaters as a result of increasing customer reports of network connectivity issues following the updates. We are currently investigating the issue and will re-post as soon as they become available.
The reported error displays "Error 3000 - Data network is not available" when attempting to connect to the data network. This error does not affect your device or personal data in any other way. Thank you for your patience."

Palm hasn't been having too much success these days with releasing ROM updates. A day after the Sprint Treo 700p MR update Palm removed it from their site because it was causing problems after 700p users updated their Treo 700p. "Zipperstein said that it was too early to tell whether the iPhone would ultimately be a success in the market," Dow Jones reports." Via MacDailyNews .
"Over a year after the phone's launch, the long-awaited ROM Maintenance Release for the Verizon version of the Treo 700p is finally being rolled out to certain Verizon Wireless corporate stores. In an odd twist deviating from Palm's usual support practices, Verizon has sent the 700p 1.10 ROM out on SD cards to select corporate stores for Verizon service technician use only. At this point in time, no user-installable version of this update is available nor has a download been leaked."
I wonder what the hold up is for the general availability release of the Verizon 700p MR on the Palm website. I haven't had any trouble applying the 700p MR using the SD card on my Sprint Treo. Hopefully my fellow Verizon Treo 700p customers will be able got get the many bug fixes included in this update.

The Boy Genius is at it again with a hands on of an un-released device. This time he has the Motorola Q9M, and it has Verizon branding as you can see from the picture.
"The Q9M uses a regular miniUSB port instead of Motorola's new favorite microUSB, which makes charging and connecting a lot easier. The Q9M also looks like it supports miniSD cards for memory expansion, and has a nice red glow around the d-pad. This Q9M brings back the scroll wheel that the GSM Q9 lacked. Another Verizon customization was the home screen. It displays shortcuts for commonly used applications like the camera, messaging, web, music in a circular pattern on the screen. The icons in Windows Mobile are completely customized, and look for VCast music support on here as well. The QWERTY keyboard is fantastic just like the other Q9 we previewed, and the device actually has a metallic plastic on the front, and a black rubberized back. It feels good in your hands, and doesn't seem like you would drop it easily. It's a tad bit thicker than the GSM Q9 but that is understandable seeing as how miniSD cards are supported, but the camera appears to be only 1.3 megapixels."

"Research In Motion has partnered with the two big US CDMA carriers to launch the new BlackBerry 8830 World Edition, the first dual-mode GSM/CDMA handset from the manufacturer. The BlackBerry 8830 combines EV-DO capable CDMA coverage with a SIM card slot for GSM use when traveling to make the device truly useful when abroad.
The new BlackBerry 8830 is similar to the already available 8800, with the manufacturer's updated design and trackball feature. There really is no going past the dual-mode functionality when looking for a killer feature for the device though, as it will be one of the first generally available devices to have such a feature when it launches with both Sprint and Verizon Wireless. The BlackBerry 8830 will work on 800/1900MHz CDMA/EV-DO networks, and when coupled with a SIM card through your selected carrier's Global BlackBerry service or a third party carrier, will also roam on 900/1800MHz GSM/GPRS services. Unfortunately, it seems that you will not be able to use a SIM card from third party providers with the Verizon Wireless version of the handset, only the one provided with the Global BlackBerry service. The Sprint version does not appear to have this limitation.
Measuring up at 114mm x 66mm x 13.9mm (4.49" x 2.6" x 0.55") and weighing in at 130.4g (4.6oz), the BlackBerry 8830 is both smart and stylish. MicroSD memory cards can be used to complement the 64MB of on board memory, and the device features a 320x240 pixel resolution 65k color TFT LCD display. Standard BlackBerry features like Bluetooth and speakerphone functionality are present, as is a build in GPS module.
The Verizon Wireless BlackBerry 8830 will be available on May 14, while Sprint customers will have to wait until sometime in July of this year."

When Palm relesed the Treo 700p it was released at the same time to both Sprint and Verizon. It looks like this will be the case with the Treo 755p. Engadget Mobile is reporting Verizon will also be releasing the Treo 755p.
"Feature lineup appears to be similar (except possibly some LBS), but for the forgetful among us, we'll give them to you again -- dual-band CDMA with EV-DO Rev. A, a 1.3 megapixel shooter, and what appears to be a sleeker, refined look a la Treo 680. Make sure you stay tuned for more details."
I remember being at a CTIA show a few years ago when Cingular Wireless agreed to acquire the old AT&T Wireless. At the time, the deal catapulted Cingular ahead of Verizon Wireless to make it the U.S. market leader. But, I also remember that Verizon Wireless at the time said they would eventually eclipse Cingular to reclaim the number one position in the U.S. market.
And now, true to their word, Verizon Wireless is back at number one, even if by the slimmest of margins." Via Information Week.

Gizmodo is reporting that Verizon will be releasing the BlackBerry 8830 World Phone. The great thing about this BlackBerry is that it's a CDMA/GSM hybrid phone, meaning you can use it on Verizon's CDMA network with EV-DO speeds and you'll also be able to use it on GSM networks in the US and overseas.Labels: blackberry, verizon
The Boy Genius is reporting that the WiFi BlackBerry 8300 might make its way to T-Mobile around May 7th. You can expect Verizon and Sprint to release the BlackBerry Pearl around the same time.
