Microsoft isn't content with renaming future Windows Mobile operating systems, now they're going back in time
Microsoft loves to change the names of their mobile operating system when they announce an update to Windows Mobile, as evidenced by the graph below. Microsoft is now going back in time and is renaming the current Windows Mobile 6.5 OS to "Windows Phone Classic". This name change will occur when Microsoft releases "Windows Phone 7 Series". You'll have from now until the holiday season to call your current Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone, Windows Mobile 6.5. When Windows Phone 7 Series ships you'll have to call your Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphone "Windows Phone Classic". Very clever Microsoft, very clever ;)

Microsoft thinks a name change will help Windows Mobile, "Windows Phone 7" is that name
"Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) will have its moment in the mobile spotlight at the World Mobile Conference in Barcelona Monday—and details are leaking out about what it has in store: Microsoft will (as widely expected) unveil the newest version of its mobile operating system, Windows Mobile 7. The WSJ says that Windows Mobile 7 will come with a user interface similar to Microsoft’s sleek Zune HD music player; Bloomberg also says the new operating system “will be more integrated with the ... Xbox game machine and Zune music player, so users can share music and videos among Microsoft devices.”

New branding may also be on the way. All About Microsoft‘s Mary-Jo Foley speculates that phones running the operating system will be called “Windows Phone 7;” previously Microsoft had been referring to all Windows Mobile phones as “Windows Phones.”

"Windows Phone 7" will be the 18th name Microsoft has given Windows Mobile over the years.

webOS market share is going up very quickly

"Admob Mobile has put out their monthly mobile metrics report and things are looking pretty good for Palm and WebOS. Last month we pointed out Admob's statistics and how WebOS already had 4% of the web market share only two months after the Pre's debut. WebOS came out in June 2009 and already showed a significant gain in web market share. Android, which debuted in October 2008 and has multiple handsets in the U.S. (G1 and MyTouch) had 8% web market share and Windows Mobile had 6%. Well the numbers are still increasing in Palm's favor."

T-Mobile Dash joins the Windows Mobile 6.5 party

With all the news about Windows Mobile 6.5 today I wanted to see if there was a way I could get it up and running on my ancient T-Mobile Dash. My T-Mobile Dash has gone through so many OS upgrades I wasn't sure it would work. The T-Mobile Dash originally came with Windows Mobile 5 for smartphone. I then upgraded it to Windows Mobile 6. I then upgraded it to Windows Mobile 6.1. Much to my surprise I was able to upgrade it to Windows Mobile 6.5. It's pretty amazing that the Dash could successfully go through so many OS upgrades.

  Gizmodo reviews Windows Mobile 6.5
Today is the day that Windows Mobile 6.5 becomes official. Gizmodo has reviewed Microsoft's latest smartphone operating system.

"I'd like to think that 6.5's stunning failure to innovate is a symptom of a neglected project—maybe Microsoft just needed something, anything to hold people over until the mythical Windows Mobile 7 comes out, whatever it is. But as Steve Ballmer himself has plainly admitted, it's worse: Microsoft has simply lumbered in the wrong direction for two years, letting everyone, save maybe Nokia, fly right past them."

Ouch!

Microsoft admits it will release a half baked Windows Mobile 6.5
"In response to complaints from users about how the Windows Mobile UI is a complete disaster, one of the members of the panel gave some insight that struck me as an honest answer. Loke Uei Tan, Senior Product Manager on the Windows Mobile Team, basically said that the 6.5 UI was rushed and will need to be further be polished: "The reason why we couldn't complete the interface on Windows Mobile 6.5 is because of time. We only spend what, eight months, nine months, to build 6.5 from ground up and it's actually an amazing engineering feat. But, in order to do that, we had to do some prioritization and we had to cut certain features. Eventually, we will make sure that the UI capabilities are carried out throughout the whole platform.   Sprint Treo Pro unboxing

The Sprint Treo Pro comes in the exact same packaging as the unlocked Treo Pro. Palm's packaging for the Sprint Treo Pro is very reminiscent of Apple's iPhone packaging. It's clear that Palm wants to make a great first impression before you even get to the Treo Pro inside its box and they succeed in doing so. Very classy!

Once you remove the top of the box of the Sprint Treo Pro the smartphone is on full display. No digging through CD's, setup guides, etc. It's all about the Treo Pro.

Inside the box you'll find:

Treo Pro smartphone

Removable 1500 mAh lithium-ion battery that Palm has already placed inside the Treo Pro (nice touch)

AC Phone Charger

MicroUSB sync cable (this plugs directly into the AC charger) and is also used to sync the Treo Pro with your computer.

Get Started Guide

There's no CD included in the box to setup the Treo Pro. Palm has actually put all of that software inside the Treo Pro itself. Once you connect the Treo Pro to your computer for the first time via the MicroUSB cable the software setup begins (another nice touch Palm!!)

In the next few days I'll post more thoughts about the Sprint Treo Pro and how it compares to my current smartphones. Stay tuned!

Microsoft Reveals New Windows® Phones With Marketplace and My Phone Services
Microsoft mobile partners fly the Windows flag: HTC, LG and Orange preview first Windows® phones.

BARCELONA, Spain — Feb. 16, 2009 — Today at Mobile World Congress 2009, Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer along with key mobile partners, HTC, LG and Orange, unveiled new Windows® phones featuring new user-friendly software and services. The next generation of Windows® phones will be based on Windows Mobile 6.5 and feature a new user interface and a richer browsing experience. In addition, Windows® phones will feature two new services: My Phone, to sync text messages, photos, video, contacts and more to the Web; and Windows® Marketplace for Mobile, a new marketplace that will provide direct-to-phone mobile applications and can be accessed from both the phone and the Web.

“Windows® phones bring together the best of the Web, the PC and the phone so you can connect instantly to the experiences you care about, no matter where you are,” Ballmer said. “We’re working with partners across the industry to deliver a new generation of Windows® phones that break down the barriers between people, information and applications and provide great end-to-end experiences that span your entire life, at work and at home.”

Windows Mobile 6.5 Delivers New User Experience

The new Windows Mobile 6.5 home screen keeps people up-to-date on important information by providing a dashboard-like experience to items such as new e-mails, texts, missed calls and calendar appointments. It also includes an improved touch-screen interface, making it easy to take action with a finger, and an updated version of the latest Internet Explorer Mobile browser, which in a third-party research study sponsored by Microsoft supported execution of up to 48 percent more assigned tasks than the other browsers and phones studied.

My Phone Service Connects the Phone to the Web

The free My Phone service will enable people to access, manage and back up their personal information on their device to a password-protected Web-based service, making it easier to upgrade phones without the worry of losing important information. With automatic syncing and backup, users can count on their contacts, appointments, text messages and other information being kept up to date and easily restored should they lose or upgrade their phone. Consumers also will be able to automatically upload photos and video from their Windows® phone directly to the My Phone service, making it simple to preserve content that, in the past, would have lived and died on the phone. The My Phone service is currently available in a limited invitation-only beta.

Rich and Integrated Marketplace Service Will Offer Easy Access to Mobile Applications

The new operating system features Windows® Marketplace for Mobile, a rich and integrated marketplace for searching, browsing and purchasing mobile applications from Windows® phones or from a PC by simply using a Windows Live ID. The new marketplace will be included with all Windows phones based on Windows Mobile 6.5, which will help consumers to easily find, install and experience those applications that fit their needs and make the phone truly personal. Developers, who have already built over 20,000 applications for Windows® phones, will be able to offer applications to customers through the marketplace via a simple security and compatibility check from Microsoft.

Google Sync for iPhone and Windows Mobile and SyncML devices

"Today, we're offering more people easy access to their information on the go with two-way calendar and contacts sync for iPhones and Windows Mobile devices, and two-way contacts sync for mobile devices that support SyncML. This will be a particularly handy improvement for people who regularly use Google tools, like corporate employees, university students, and busy families.

For iPhone and Windows Mobile devices, Google Sync allows you to get your Gmail contacts and Google Calendar events onto your phone. Sync uses push technology, which means that any changes you make to your calendar or contacts from the browser or phone will be reflected on your device within minutes. For phones that support SyncML, the tool will allow you to get your Gmail contacts onto your phone. For all of these devices, synchronization happens automatically over the air, without having to manually sync your phone. The connection is always on, which means your information is always up-to-date, no matter where you are or what you're doing.

Getting started is easy. You can configure Google Sync directly from your device. The instructions and capabilities vary for different phones, so check out our Help Center for device-specific information. If you're a Google Apps user, Google Sync must be enabled for your domain by your administrator.

Following our credo to launch early and iterate, we're introducing Google Sync in beta. Before you begin, we encourage you to review a few known issues for the iPhone and Windows Mobile devices. Also, please keep in mind that Google Sync will replace all existing contacts and calendar information on your phone, so make sure to back up any important data before you get started. You can find out more information on backing up your data in the Help Center.

Steve Ballmer confirms Zune software coming to Windows Mobile

"During a lengthy interview, Steve Balmer was asked to justify developing the Zune media player.

CIO: Why has Microsoft developed Zune?

Ballmer: At the end of the day, one of the big trends is that all content is going digital. And if we don’t have the software and services that are useful, helpful and valuable for the consumption of music and video, we are sort of not really a player.

Now, we built the Zune hardware with the Zune software - and what you’ll see more and more over time is that the Zune software will also be ported to and be more important not just with the hardware but on the PC, on Windows Mobile devices, etc." Via WMPoweruser .

  Windows Mobile 7 release delayed
"Microsoft has informed some of its partners that it has had to delay Windows Mobile 7, a much anticipated update to its cell phone operating system.

Although Microsoft has not publicly said when to expect Windows Mobile 7, partners who had expected to have a final release in their hands by early next year have been told now that it won't be ready until the second half of next year, sources told CNET News.

The delay is a significant blow for the software maker, which has been counting on the next version of Windows Mobile to enable devices that better rival Apple's iPhone. Among the features widely expected to be part of the release is advanced gesture recognition, perhaps along the lines of the iPhone, but possibly also using the camera as a means for reading gestures. Microsoft's Tellme unit, which focuses on speech input, has also been working on Windows Mobile 7 features." Via CNET .

Skymarket is expected to debut when Microsoft launches Windows Mobile 7. The specs page on the Palm website also confirmes the leaked information that has flooded the Internet over the past few days.

Opera Mobile 9.5 beta is released

Mobile browsing gets a makeover

Opera Software today released the much-anticipated, first public version of Opera Mobile 9.5 beta. A powerful foreshadowing of what is to come, this beta takes mobile browsing speed and features to a new level, complete with visual effects and a new look. Download the new beta from http://www.opera.com/products/mobile/ .

Opera has changed the face of its mobile browser in this beta release. As with the latest version of Opera Mini, Opera Mobile 9.5 beta now defaults to page overview mode, allowing the user to view the entire Web page and instantly recognize the Web site. With panning and zooming options, the user is able to focus on specific page content. Opera also introduces a sleek, new user interface for easier navigation.

“Our fans have been eager for the release of Opera Mobile 9.5 since it first appeared at the Mobile World Congress this year,” says Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. “We are now answering the call of the people and delivering what we proudly proclaim to be our best Opera Mobile browser to date. It is a totally new user experience.”

I just installed Opera Mobile on the Treo 800w I'm testing and it's VERY impressive. It easily beats Internet Explorer in terms of features, usability, and speed.
